I know this isn’t build or design advice but I’ve been chasing a rat around the garden all day with the dogs hoping one would kill it! I’m waiting for pest control to call back but any unusual tips for rat catching would be appreciated.
I’ve got the skip being collected tomorrow and going to get rid of old planters and other debris and I’d already got rid of compost heap and apple trees last year since I knew neighbours had rats. I’ve got five neighbours and three of us are working to discourage rats but two insist on feeding birds and keeping massive compost heaps.
Anyhow, just wondered if anyone has tips. I’ve already put poison under shed and loads of rat traps and made the dogs stay outside today.

My parents have problems with rats and mice (old tumble down country cottage not helped by the abandoned cars full of rubbish backing onto their garden but that’s another story). Anyway, they’ve had pest control plus environmental health come round and they put special tubes with poison near the rat holes which work. I also suggested mixing the poison granules with crushed up digestive biscuits which they said worked really well. But just a precaution and goes without saying, do NOT let any other animals or children have access to this! Another option is to get a cat although most of the cats we had couldn’t be bothered.

    Thanks Rachel,
Will ask the pest control man when he rings me about those tubes. Yes, concerned about poison since I’ve got dogs. I’ve even got an owl figure with a nodding head now! Someone said I should put oatmeal mixed with cement down. And someone else suggested tease out wire wool because they won’t run over that.
Tbh, since I’ve seen this rat I’m on tenterhooks so I’ve got to do everything I can to calm my own nerves!!

Hi. Before 1.5 year ago we had a wonderful neighbours! Was really good friends and we still visiting them and they us. But new owners are nightmare, horrible. They do everything what they wont and no body can help! Build shed along boundaries without asking permission, when we was build fence at boundaries they was demanded fence at 2.5 m high. They smoking meat at weekend day time, knocking at walls in the middle of night, swearing when play games - with open windows, loud music . Just no words! We try to chat with them - but they polish and was just two answers - I do not understand and Its my property I can do what I want! Council was told its both private properties -we cant do nothing! We just wait maybe they decide to move somewhere . But its just one house in community - where bad neighbours-others are friendly and we make bbq together and do children's parties.

Hi- I would recommend going out to the side for the best overall dimensions. If you retain the door in through the garage, you will retain the side access to the garden (albeit with a few metres of kitchen flooring in between, but that’s usually easy to clean material). I would keep the bins along the back wall of the garage. If you buy good ones with hinged, snap shut lids you won’t have a problem with vermin.

Re cats. I would get a cat, I think they are beautiful animals, from a distance. But up close I’m ridiculously afraid of them!!
My hubby was afraid of dogs, till we got our adorable lab puppy (not so much a pup anymore tho) now he’ll hug the biggest scariest dog he sees. Dogs and cats don’t always mix tho. Our very old grumpy indoor cat hates the dog so much so he jumps on my shoulders when he wants to get anywhere (feel like the cat lady sometimes). I’m rambling, with regards to the rat they’re only doing what’s natural in winter and seeking food and warmth which is why you’re seeing them close to the houses. Poison is the only way to eradicate them so I’m sure pest control will help sort it.

argh, rats. I had a disused allotment and megga tons of decking hat we called the rat run. My husky killed one in the house one night, it was HUGE!
You do right to clear the grounds and work with neighbours on it, but I know just what you mean when not everyone gets it... I have neighbours feeding birds... and worst of all, one that keeps chickens. There used to be a lot more chickens, and when they got rid of them, the rats went too... now theyve got another chicken and am back to finding baby rats under my truck on a morning presumed a gift from one of my cats very once in a while.

    Thanks Rose
Yes been been outside all day clearing but still not finished. It’s all “clean” debris in the garden but it still provides cover for them. But apparently the more you move stuff around the more discouraged they are because they don’t like “new” or “disturbance”. Skip has just been picked up and even though it’s snowing hard now I’m going back out for last daylight hours.
A friend said she’s bringing an air rifle round tomorrow but I’ve only seen the one and have no idea how I’m meant to shoot rats if I can’t see them!
Oh I’m also going to soak under shed and keep doing it so it’s unpleasantly wet.
Just found out one of the neighbours is keeping chickens.
Another neighbour who’s lived here for 40 years says there’s been occasional years when rats have been a problem but mostly not. But he did point out that we are not very far from a river, a train line and trust land.
Not sure if that’s reassuring or not.

In my experience, where theres chickens, there are rats, Its the chicken feed... But if theyre well housed and food controlled, it may not be the cause. Anyone keeping junk in their garden? old cars/vans etc?

You asking me that question made me think and I’ve just realised the neighbours neighbours house on the other side has been empty for ages, and I heard some work being done today (can’t actually see that property) so maybe they’ve disturbed rats which are looking for new homes??
Anyway I’ve been out there all day today and the dogs haven’t been going mad for anything so maybe they’ve decided it’s not safe in my garden... fingers crossed!

    Hi Emily
Rose is right, where there are chickens there are always rats. If you live in the country you learn to get used to them.
My tips are for keeping them out of your house,
Firstly get a sonic repeller and place near the back door, secondly, plant mint in pots near your opening doors. If that fails best option is a jack Russell or any other terrier!! Good luck!

Funny thing last night, I spotted a Rat jumping over the neighbours wall, they'll be living in the junkyard of about 17 vehicles in there. I agree, it's something you may just have to live with like I do. Moiraford... Mint?, never heard of that one apart from it seems to deter midges, handy to know in rural Wales. Mint grows like mad here so I'll be having some of that closer to the house then thanks!

We have a constant problem with rats as we live in the country. Luckily we have a great springer cross jack russell who's sole ambition is to rid the world of them. However, please be careful with poison, Lilly was poisoned last year when she killed a rat and ingested some of it's blood - she dispatches them fast, but in doing so, it often leads to blood shed ( don't want to be disgusting ). One of our neighbour's had put poison down, but got it from a farmer friend!

If you call the council, they will send out a pest control officer who uses pet friendly poison. We keep a little stash of this out as they do multiply very quickly. We often have to set traps too just to keep numbers down.

    Thanks Math
I am waiting for council to call. And yes I’m worried about my dogs. I put some poison under shed but not much just in case it got pulled out.
Feeling a bit calmer because the dogs aren’t itching to get out and run around now so think they are on neighbours properties. Still not good because clearly I’m going to have to constantly work at discouraging them!
My builder is coming back for snagging when he’s finished another job, what can I do to make sure they don’t get in my drains? My covers are plastic rubbish that needs replacing???

The rats are unlikely to want to go down the drains. It's cold, they come in to gardens looking for food, then they go back to their nests. Mice would be worse, they like to come in! If you're worried about the drain covers, put big stones on them.

Not everyone can ignore them, but they're always about. They can be very destructive and breed ridiculously fast, so keeping on top of them is essential. However, in some places, like where we are out in the sticks, you're never going to get rid of all of them it's just not possible.

We feed the birds too and yes the rats come in to pick up the bits of peanuts etc that the birds drop. ( we accept this as part of life ), the dog picks some off, traps get some, just the way it is.

I guess you just have to do what you can to discourage them. If neighbours are feeding birds in other gardens, when they realise there's nothing in yours, they'll stick to what they know elsewhere. They're creatures of habit.

Math, that’s what I’m hoping. I know there’s always rats around but if my property is unhospitable fingers crossed they can live with the neighbours!

Jumping on the thread with a concern I have here, I have a customer who is getting rats in her house through the cavity believed to be from the neighbours side and they are getting into the loft space any one know the route to take to erase the problem any easy fixes possible? I'm assuming you cant get to the cavity from the loft space to block it up as it would be to tight to access. grateful for any advice:) all unused drainage has been blocked up but did not stop the issue, All ground floors are vented floating floors old 1930s house.

The only choice MBH I feel is to get pest control out and eradicate them with poison. The neighbour's house needs to be investigated to see how they've got in first and foremost.

Hi Emily. I have a garden with a few apple trees. As long as you don't leave the apples lying on the ground when they fall they shouldn't attract rats. I was also strongly discouraged by a neighbour not to start composting due to previous issues with rats but haven't found them to be a problem since we started to use 'dalek' type composting bins with solid bottoms to prevent rats burrowing underneath. On balance I would rather compost carefully (and put up with the slightly increased risk of the occasional rat) than put food waste into landfill or buy another garden waste bin.

Well I may have had an over-reaction last year when I found out the neighbours had rats AK! But it was at the time the apples were falling and they were in the area of the compost bin and I found a hole right on the boundary which a friend said that was a rat hole. Actually just writing that is raising my blood pressure!
But anyway, I do have a kitchen sink waste disposal and I do have another compost site at the start of the private lane that leads to my property where I take shrub or hedge cuttings that couldn’t be used for anything else because there’s lots of trees close together. And grass goes to in the council bin and I shred leaves and put them on the borders.
I suppose I might have a phobia?? I don’t know how I might have developed one but I certainly feel compelled to fight rats out of my garden!!

My neighbour had pest control out last summer and the poison killed a rat in his garden. A couple of months ago I heard noises underneath the bath. Pest control came out & did a thorough check of the whole house/garden but couldn’t find any obvious signs of entry & there were only a few mouse droppings under the bath. Poison/traps laid & we haven’t heard anything since. Touch wood! We have an apple tree in our garden & our neighbours have a pond so they have a food & water source unfortunately!!
    Thanks Lts
Pest control haven’t rang me back yet! But haven’t seen any sign of any in the garden although I have neighbours at the front of my property too ( strange set up where I am) and the dogs are still barking along where they have compost heaps. As long as they stay over there that will be fine!
And on a mission outside, for the last 3 days been jet washing not only the brick sets but everywhere! Very satisfying!
Just can’t bear the thought of them getting too close to the house!

I awoke to our Siberian Husky with blood down his chest one morning... first thought ... 2 cats.. check, is the dog ok... check, child... check... looked everywhere.... and then in the late afternoon came across the giant rat with a clean cut near severed head. Spent the rest of the week saying "GOOOOOD BOY"

I do not believe it! Just gone in my attached garage and there’s a funny smell. And the hoover cable chewed through! I cleared it out a few weeks ago and was using it for painting shelves so if there’s rats in there they’ve not been in long.
On way to buy yet more traps even though not caught anything outside. And going to scrub and clean everything in there tomorrow. Going to put Nutella on traps surely they can’t resist that.
I’ve even put up some battery small motion sensor lights so I’ve got more coverage than existing lights. But haven’t noticed them going off by anything other than me and dogs.
