Kitchen Appliances!?!

Hi, in the early stages of planning a new kitchen, however I'm stuck on what appliances should be installed. I have an aga but I am contemplating installing an electric hob? I'm not sure where it would go though, also how many electric ovens would you recommend, I really enjoy cooking and my daughter enjoys baking, so I assume they will get used but I don't know how many, and also if one should also be a microwave to avoid the bulkiness on the counter. And should I have a integrated fridge, with a slightly not so contemporary kitchen? Thank you

Hi I feel your pain as I hate making decisions. I had my kitchen done a few months ago and opted for a gas on glass hob and neff slide and hide oven and a neff combination microwave on top. I also cook a lot and have to say I do like the microwave off the worktop. To be honest I use the smaller oven the most and don't really miss having a separate microwave.

I think you can never have too many ovens, especially if you entertain . There are some ovens out there with specialist features and handy things like warming drawers. It is hard to say what is best without knowing the size of the kitchen and what cupboard space you would need to compromise in order to have extra ovens. I also have an integrated fridge freezer which suits the style of my kitchen but sometimes in a more spacious country style kitchen I think a separate fridge freezer looks nice and they are also more spacious than an integrated one.

The first thing I'd recommend is an induction hob. Fast, economic and easy to clean. Can't understand why people still have gas hobs that take forever to clean.

I always think an oven in a tower looks far nicer than a range. Plus you don't have to bend down to put items in or out. You can have a single or double oven then a separate steam oven. Having had built in ovens for as long as I can remember (probably 35+ years) there's no way I'd contemplate anything else. I like the look and convenience of it. I've heard before people question the size of them and that always puzzles me. I cook a lot and have no problems cooking a roast on one shelf, roast potatoes on another shelf and then Yorkshire puddings or parsnips on a third shelf all within the same oven. I also cook a large turkey every Christmas. No problem with space. Regarding hobs it simply has to be an induction hob. So fast, clean and cheaper to run than others. If you have the budget look for a decent brand e.g. Bosch, AEG, Neff or Miele.

Neff, Miele and Siemens are all good brands. Gaggenau are more industrial in appearance and have odd cabinetry sizes so be careful with their size specifications. They also stand proud of the cabinet so you don't get a flush appearance (if that is what you want to achieve). Most of our customers opt for Neff for ovens and hobs and sometimes Bosch for washing machines and dishwashers, but it is really down to personal choice and what your budget allows. On a personal note I have had Neff ovens for over twenty years, but recently mine stopped working. We replaced it temporarily with another brand but I can't get on with it - unreliable temperatures and cooking times etc etc. I would buy a Neff Slide and Hide every time!

If I were quoting from one of our cheapest ranges off the top of my head that would be around £700-£800. Unfitted. If the space is 630mm wide then a standard undermounted oven is 600mm. They are all the same width. I would presume they have allowed for some end panels? I’m betting the splashback is 600 wide? If that were me I’d buy the oven and get a local carpenter to fit it in. As I said most do not need a carcase so he would just have to fill the space with a 15mm panel which is easy enough to do as he could put a shelf into them to sit the oven on. Do remember a single oven will require a filler panel 110 x 600. A double oven does not require any fillers. Then you need a hob over it assuming you don’t have one. I can’t tell from the image exactly what colour the fascias are. Are they a grey green? If so they could be called Dakar.

I’m glad you like it. It’s always trial and error when buying something new and cooking in a different way. I have just purchased an air fryer but it’s not a Ninja so doesn’t have as many features. Was reluctant to spend £££s if I didn’t like it. Have become a member of several FB sites that offer information and recipes. Tonight I will be trying it out for the first time in the hope of eating less fat especially as I’m now 4 weeks post op for having my gall bladder out which apparantly was full of stones and caused me horrendous pain and hospital admission. I have bought some bread pans so am also going to have a go at breadmaking.

Hi Catherine,
Is you Aga on all year ? Many of our past clients with Agas have a simple plug in two ring hob for summer use( when it might be off) - one lady had three of these ( 6 rings) as she had a large family - with the oven question - again depends on your family size and habits - but often, a pair of Demi sized ovens can be good as extra back up or summer use ovens - or a single oven and a demi that’s also a microwave. But to be honest, without seeing the amount of space you have in order to accommodate these extra cooking items - it’s tricky to advise !

If you use your Aga fully then you should keep it but it doesn’t dictate your kitchen design- you can go traditional or contemporary.
Stand alone fridges are ugly.
Personally (assuming you have room) I would have an integrated larder fridge, and integrated larder freezer, a built in oven and induction hob and an integrated microwave/ combination oven.

Super brief design, red are cabinets, yellow is doors and windows, the doors at the top are french opening doors, roughly each square is 1 sq. m :)

Gosh everyone is so different with preferences! I prefer gas hobs and many stand alone fridges are ugly but not all. And I’ve had both and I prefer stand alone since both times I had integrated fridges I found the condensation too difficult to control and neither were budget models.
In a previous house I had two dishwashers which seemed to many ridiculous but i really liked it. In my current kitchen I went with the Fischer paykle dish drawers to give similar benefits of being able to keep worktops clear even when dishwasher is on. Really impressed with them would definately recommend

And one other appliance I’m pleased with is the insinkerator boiling water tap. It’s not as expensive as the qwooker one but it can produce enough to boil pasta or potatoes. But the best part about it is in an open plan set up. It means you don’t have to have the kettle making a noise and the kids turn the telly up to deafen you!
Personally I think standalone basic microwaves are best for someone like me who just uses them to heat up basics. Since all the power is just used for the basic function.

Beware that typical wine fridges are unlikely to have a door the same depth as your cabinets so it could spoil the lines of your kitchen.
If cost is not an issue consider a wine chiller that fits into a compact oven aperture.

As mentioned above, induction can be a great choice and we see more and more people opting for them. However, gas cooking is still a preference to a lot of people too. In regards to ovens it depends on how much and what you will be using them for. Check the functions on different ovens to see if they have good uses for what you enjoy cooking.

In terms of layout, you could put them in a quad style layout (with a combination microwave/coffee machine/warming drawer), all in a row or above one another.

Integrated fridges can look beautiful in various kitchen styles, however it is true that you can loose a little bit of space compared to stand alone ones - so it depends how much room you need.
