Comments (32)Tiles are one way to introduce some pops of colour in your kitchen. If you are worried about the grout discolouring, use epoxy grout which is more resilient to liquid staining. Also, if you use a coloured grout, discolouration will be less noticeable. If you choose textured tiles with rectilinear edges, grout lines are almost invisible. Using tiles can look more traditional compared to glass or stainless steel. The problem with stainless steel is keeping it looking good. Drip marks and grease are instantly noticeable. Glass is less obvious when splashed. They are both more industrial and modern looking. What about using the same material that makes up your worktop as the splashback? Comments (3)Do you need a backsplash? What do you want from it? Colour, pattern, or just to protect the walls from splashes (the only reason I think makes sense!) I have no backsplash, my sink is against a wall but it's vinyl Matt and it wipes easily. My hob is on island so no backslash needed. If it's just for behind your hob you can use glass, so not obvious. I would suggest you wait til your kitchen units/worktop/floor is all fitted before deciding, it makes it easier!...See More

PRO8 years agoCan't really see your floor, but if you don't want plain generic white, something like this may work. Classy and calming.

1st pic - colour of all of our cabinets & vanities (portabello)
2nd pic - maple floors & colour of old cabinets
3rd pic - our two paint colours throughout the house
4th pic - cosmic black granite countertops in the kitchen

Fireclay has some pretty ones, all handmade. Here is Luna. Might looks nice with the veining in your granite. It seems to have the right color tone, but you’d have to order a sample.

I like the idea of mixing these textures--teak wood and grey/green glass would compliment your flooring and tie together the dark cabinets while adding a bit of color, all while remaining neutral.
You could also do a pretty metallic green like this

...or a sage green glass subway tile (pair with a darker grout for more contrast, and it won't look like your "run of the mill" subway tile)

the first one is ok,,,,if they were larger sizes like your second one. All those small mosaics once installed, look visually 'busy'. is this what you want?
try and find those is this size or larger ,,,look for something like these
or, get a solid color in the bars that look like this

Hi Mandy, I love that wave pattern! I also loved the elongated hex. In fact this exact tile that was my dream for my kitchen, but I couldn’t afford it.
I think these two patterns go for either $28 or $35. You’d have to check. I did see the wave design had a few colors that I thought could work. You get five free samples I believe. Here are four colors I’d try.
If the wave would be within your budget, I’d go for it. It would be stunning.

Many, I like that idea. (the elongated 'Wave' in the Luna.) there is a Canadian company that has some great tiles. We helped out someone who lived in NS and she ordered from them. check them out and see if you like anything.

The woodgrain, although subtle, is a strong pattern because it's horizontal. The countertop is also subtle in some sense but active with the movement and contrast of the veins.
Honestly I don't think anything so far is quite right. They all introduce more pattern and its too much.
A lot of people probably dislike this kitchen, (it's George and Laura Bush's), but I picture it here because it kind of has a universal modern appearance (is it 2010, is it from 1990 but forward thinking?), like your kitchen--and it has an architectural glass or backpainted starphire glass backsplash, which is the direction I would be thinking of for your kitchen. I don't think you want to muddy it up with lots of groutlines and shapes.
