Ceiling Light Vs Wall Sconce

I've come across an awesome wall sconce for this study /snug room. But being a small space I'm loathe to overload it with fittings, especially since I'm probably putting a desk lamp on the desk as well. I'm wondering if it would be dumb to take the ceiling light out and just go with the sconce. Technically I'd only need light above the sofa for reading and a desk lamp on the desk for desky stuff, I just wonder how this would impact the way the room would feel. So, if anyone has done this and regretted it that would be helpful to know.

Hmm not sure that I would want a wall sconce just behind my head on the sofa- It might be distracting when watching TV. If you don’t agree I think it is fine to also have a ceiling light.

In my humble opinion the better choice is some inset floor washers under each window for a cinema type experience- you would also keep the ceiling light but have it on a different switch.

I am not a fan of 'wall sconces' - I actually had to google to find out what they are. In a living area I would have overhead pendant and lamps.

Another reason I like them is if you rearrange your room then the wall sconce might not be in the 'right place' any more.

Each works for different rooms. Dark colours can add luxury - as they did for our dramatic makeover of a bedroom. The charcoal colour is elegant and calming in both winter and summer due to south facing windows. Light / off-white colours add to a contemporary aesthetic - especially in a cohesive look and feel within an open plan scheme or where it is necessary to draw attention away from a relatively low ceiling as was the case in this dining room we designed in a duplex apartment in the South of France. The problem further solved by low-back dining chairs.

Traditionally farm houses usually had wall sconce lighting. Hi Julia, it's a bit difficult making suggestions from a distance without seeing and 'feeling' the space but you have several options... pendant lights are certainly one, as Pavilion Broadway has suggested. You could have several dotted around the space, even hanging them at different heights - which could be fun. Alternatively you could use LED strip lighting around the room - this gives a very modern look and of course could be used in conjunction with other types of lighting. The attractive vaulted ceiling means you will be looking up at it so you don't want to be blinded by spotlights pointing down and remember you'll occasionally need to change bulbs so whatever you install make sure it is accessible. Depending on how you decorate and furnish the room you could consider a variety of lighting that works from the floor upwards. I think we are too often stuck on the idea that lights have to come down from the ceiling. They don't. Hope that helps but will be happy to discuss further. Best wishes, it looks a super project. I had grey/white porcelain marble effect tiles in my last bathroom with a light grey grout and they never needed a proper cleaning as never looked dirty. However, it costs us over £1k just to tile and about £600 for the tiles! so I think some panelling around the shower would help reduce costs

Do you still need some lighting advice?

The sconce would be a good idea for when watching T.V, as it will create a relaxed mood. I would advice to keep the existing ceiling lighting as an alternative, with a separate switch, due to the lack of light the sconce can provide.

You could, perhaps, replace the ceiling lighting with similar style to the sconce? What particular style do you like? Pendant lighting could go very well in your study/snug room. Also, an image of the sconce would help. I would be happy to help you.
