Pruning Japanese maple

I’ve debated on trimming this jap maple for awhile now and thought I’d see what you guys thought. I don’t know the variety, it’s a healthy tree. It does sit in full sun literally all day so I have to keep it watered. It was here when we moved in a few years ago. I’ve only ever cut out dead and crossing branches and a few very low laterals. Every time I look at it, it looks unnatural, not how I picture a Japanese maple I guess. Considering it has 4 “leaders” my thought was to make one leader over the next few years but I would think the tree would look like worse.
