Hi. Congratulations! What actual styles do you like? Which way does the room face in terms of light? Do you have a picture of the floor? Are you looking at a more traditional leather sofa or velvet one? Wallpaper is also quite hard to choose for someone, are there any particular patterns you like or don’t like? If you’ve got the budget I’d reinstate the fire. I’d also opt for roman blinds. Will you have a tv in the room and will it fit in the alcove if so?

I do like quite modern but as the house is old I don’t want to put my grey cloth sofas and cuddle chair in, it would look so wrong. Thought maybe a black leather chesterfield in that room and a small dining table and just a couple of chairs. The ceiling is very high with original cornice and I dropped on a beautiful old nine arm glass chandelier at a local auction for £23 last week so that’s my starting point. The room is about 14ft square and I will have a tv in there in the alcove by the larger window. The photo was taken late afternoon which makes it look a bit dark but it is a really bright house. It is not overlooked at all the garden is to the side by the small window and is about a quarter of an acre. Hoping to get some chickens and ducks soon. The flooring is dark brown with grey streaks in it. I quite like the damask heavy wallpapers. I wanted to go for all white walls throughout with the odd feature wall but my mum thinks it will look like a huge cow shed and thinks different shades of grey should be used. Sorry to ramble on but as we are starting from scratch we want to get it right. Thanks.

A Victorian house can adopt lots of interior styles so would try your existing bits first. Not sure on your thoughts on a tan sofa as black can be quite harsh for a big piece of furniture. I might DIY some panelling on the wall adjacent to the small window to zone dining. Bring in the damask for cushions. Hopefully these pictures will make sense as some don’t just have said objects in! I’d add a slim console behind the sofa and add lamps and an ornament/s. Maybe a Persian style rug? Blues work well with tan. Not sure how many you want to seat for dining but maybe a pedestal with some slim width blue velvet chairs and add a vase of tall stems? I might go for a tall antiqued mirror as it gives quite a grand look (last pic). I’d also have a glass coffee table, I like brass for warmth, but the glass will make the room feel visually bigger. Maybe a warm grey on the walls although victorians went for dramatic colours! You could also add 1 or 2 oriental accessories as it works well with the period. Not sure if this is the kind of thing you want? What is the width of the alcove and tv for a unit?

Thanks for your ideas. You won’t believe this but I’ve got almost the exact table you recommended. I’m always at auctions and bought it a couple of weeks ago for £10. It needs doing up a bit and It’s probably a smaller version but very similar. I will just put 2 velvet chairs with it and we did think to always have a nice bunch of flowers on there
