I think that you are attracted to the walnut because if feels like a more expensive product but if you are going to do Georgian style with deep skirtings and ornate architrave and grand cornice then a painted panel door is best. In my opinion painted panel doors work with the other features and make a cohesive scheme, but also Georgian coving and architrave is decorative and you don’t want to detract from that. Also classical grand features work when their proportions all match- for instance the coving should be as deep as the skirting, which should be as high as the bottom rail of the door and the plinth of the fire surround. The middle rail of the door and the door knob are the height of dado rails and the legs of the fire surround. The door panels above the middle rail of the door suggest the approximate mantle height and the top of the door suggests one possible height for the picture rail (although in high ceilinged rooms I prefer picture rails to be a skirting board width down from the coving). As far as putting in modern features such as contemporary kitchens this can also work if you have cabinets that have the right presence for the room. I think extra tall wall cabinets are needed for high ceilings but since the kitchen choice and design is room specific perhaps it deserves its own thread when you are ready to start planning it.

I think that these cabinets are a nice choice and I think wood has a natural warm ness so hubby shouldn’t worry it will look cold. Most likely he means that it is too pale for his taste but of course you can add colour to the wall later if he still feels that way. Perhaps you can find a wallpaper you like for a feature wall in the snug. I also liked some of the concrete style tile suggestions. For me I am not keen on kitchen layout particularly the oven position and the peninsula. I think the peninsula cuts in half an otherwise spacious room and is a barrier to accessing your fridge and oven. To me it feels like you missed the opportunity to make the kitchen feel bigger and the kitchen is probably occupying a very similar position to the outgoing one even though walls have moved. Personally I think you should be investigating a plan where your oven and fridge are towards the area you have put a breakfast bar. If you have longer runs of units this helps you see the wide drawers which is a particular feature of this contemporary kitchen. You could also increase the distance between the sink and the hob which is of course your working area. Personally I think the room would be feel bigger without the shown peninsula breakfast bar and instead a bistro table by the garden doors.

Hiya, I do like the gold/copper side tables :) but we have soooo many metallics going into the lounge/diner/kitchen that I just wanted something a little less gold in the spare room! ......... ..... Yes, the writing bureau is 100% going in the guest bedroom as that is where it will get used. It will be used for the laptop and paperwork, in a room with a sea view. The guest bedroom will have a double purpose- the view is too beautiful for it only to be used for guests. Also it’s over 20ft long!
