If you want to paint, paint. I think I'd agree with the people who suggest professional re spraying though unless you love diy and love the idea of being able to change the colour yourself relatively quickly. I recently painted a dresser (heavily stained and varnished wood, nowhere near as nice as yours) and a chest of drawers (bog standard orange pine) and unless you can take the wood right back it takes coats and COATS and a lot of patience to get a good finish. It is worth it though! Personally, I'd go for a greyish blue on the bottom half, White worktops, and paint the uppers the same white as the tiles (there's nothing intrinsically wrong with them, a classic choice that won't date). Put in a steel splashback behind the cooker (it should be possible to fit over tiles) to tone with your handles and a hard wearing natural fibre rug on the floor to break up the dark grey. A few wood accessories and the usual bits and pieces to finish.

The TV needs to find another place in the room. Without seeing the whole room it's hard to say where. But it shouldn't be hiding what looks to be a lovely fireplace. we had a similar issue in our period flat - I hated walking in and seeing THE TV. We solved it by changing its position (so that it's offset from centre) and wall mounting it, hiding all the cables. The TV stand here is just wrong and out of keeping IMHO.

Pictures would be very helpful. If you don't want to see anything behind the fretwork ( if that's what it is, then use clear acrylic sheet. You can purchase it very easily online and then attach it with furniture pins from the inside.

It looks great Sam! I love the cabinet, and the flooring choice too, you’d never know it was lino. We have Lino in our utility room, its so easy to keep clean...lovely and warm and soft under bare feet too! You must be so pleased with it, everything works together really well.
