How about putting the chest of drawers under the window so it is visible when you first walk into the room. Then put the desk where the chest of drawers is currently. I would then get a large storage TV unit for the end wall where the dark furniture is. This would be best in white or taupe to keep it light in that end of the room. You could even get this made in the same units as the kitchen cupboards. I would buy new 3 seater sofas in a traditional or classic style to suit the antiques in a beige colour linen and then two armchairs in a patterned material - floral or stripe to suit your personal taste. I would keep the sofas in the same position and place the two armchairs facing the TV unit, side by side. You would need to make sure the armchairs were placed so they were easy to walk around and they would need to be small but comfortable. Keep the table where it is and update the lamp to a more statement piece. An orchid (fake or real) on the chest of drawers would add a touch of class. I quite like the rug that is there as it goes nicely with the antiques and you could bring out the blues with a few duck egg blue coloured cushions, and a duck egg blue roman blind would soften the window. Just some ideas.... I'd love to see photos when you've finished, it's a lovely space!

From what i'm reading, I think you have only two choices on actual brick walls. The one with the cooker is an outside wall isn't it?? .....and then the one with the clock. Totally depends on how much work you want to make for yourself. If you just want to 'dip a toe', then go for the one with the clock. If you want to go all out then do the one with the cooker and hob. However..........and we have done a few of these now........that is Victorian houses...........Lyme plaster is a pain to work with!. Once you touch one bit 10 minutes later you've got a patch 3'x3', then you get bits that feel like they're welded on! Also, we have found on many of the houses that we have done full renovations on, the Victorians were fond of an 'anything goes' brick size approach! So be prepared to unearth allsorts and more importantly, be prepared to have to re-point most , if not all of the brickwork with Lyme mortar and then seal it! It isn't for the feint hearted. Hi Zach, I have read through the comments and was looking to see if you rearranged the room to incorporate a table. However, with the layout as is, you may want to consider a Console table that turns into a Dining Table. There are loads at varying price points to choose from. I have added a contemporary style below that may be of use with your scheme. This table is on offer, reduced by 30% to £192.50 from http://www.laredoute.co.uk/ Gallina Folding Console Dining Table. What I like about it is the position of the legs and the light oak may compliment your Ercol side table etc. (It also comes in grey). It can be used as a Desk with the chair facing the wall , or as a daily Dining Table with one chair against the back positioned on the Kitchen wall and the other facing the wall. When you do have guests for a dinner party, you can adjust the Living room and just pull out the table out and add two folding chairs (that are stored elsewhere). Personally, I love the colour of the Living Room and would continue this colour all around the room and under the stairs as it would help to make the room appear larger. It also appears to be a bright room and with your light coloured flooring and armchair, would look great. With regard to lighting. I see you have a power point under the stairs. Before painting, I would ask your Electrician to channel up the wall, add a funky, contemporary wall light and make good. This would allow you to have a dimmable wall light that you could use as a task light and dim for a more intimate dinner. David Village Lighting have a great website and I have used them on many occasions. You may want to take a look at Artemide on their site. The alternative, if you did not want to use the same colour paint throughout the room would be to add a funky geometric wipeable or vinyl wallpaper. I love Elitis, Cole and Son, Tektura, etc. As you would need such a small amount, it would not be too costly. Elitis have some funky options and Cole and Son Geometric and Geometric ll could look great and have the tones that could compliment the style of your room. With regard to the two chairs that would sit by the table on a daily basis. I would potentially look at a couple of replica sites . i.e. Swiveluk.com, Bluesuntree, Vertigo etc. and pick chairs that are not too wide. (Ideally stackable). For reference, I did a job where we stored the two spare stackable chairs in the bedroom where we installed a storage bed with loads of storage under the mattress. Good luck with everything:-) Susan

Hi Andrei, From a circulation view point I think you would naturally enter the room and form an arc to the right to the kitchen arriving at the kitchen island so the dining table would be best on the right I feel. A fire on the left where the vase is would look good visually as you walk in and less cluttered along that wall. If the island is movable I would suggest moving it to the right, closer to the sink and hob to allow a line of site from the sofa to the garden though the French doors. Perhaps a square coffee table tucked in close to the right angle of the sofa would be best for circulation and a bigger rug anchored by the legs of the sofa, perhaps curved on its outer edge to echo a round table?
