Kids garden, 6 and 8. Creative options

Hi all, I'm looking for some advice with what to me is a large garden and presently not very kid friendly. Advice I've had so far, "move house". Lol. I want the top turfed but not sure on what to do with the bottom, as you can see it is stepped down and sleepers are used for retaining, of which are very rotted.
So I'm looking for creative options and things I can do myself.

Don't move, improve! :)

Your garden seems a great size and full of potential.

And all that against a backdrop of what seems to be some serious woodland. Great.

I'm sure you'll get some useful tips her.

Thanks, I've had a suggestion of a gabion wall replacing all of the sleepers but feel I would lose a feauture, make the bottom area too dark and it is very expensive.

I would move the utility room & shower/wc in to the front dining room, keep the door off the hall & link the 2 rooms with a door between & block off door from kitchen or keep this & have to separate rooms if you would rather keep them as per existing. Blocking this door gives you the option of extending kitchen units but means walking through to hallway to reach either facility. Lounge to become your combined study & play room. Potential to have sliding doors into living space to join the two areas? The back of the house can then be one space, extend kitchen with a peninsula off the rear wall where kitchen units end to right of existing sink, which will then give you your breakfast bar. You could then have bi-fold doors across the remaining rear wall to the garden, the remaining space can be used for dining & an area for sofas-chairs with tv on wall or unit/storage. Hi there! I’d love to hear what you are using the under the stair spaces for. It looks like the bike could fit under the stairs near main entrance comfortably. You then could use the current bike area for the utility i.e. muddy stuff mops and sports equipment. As such you would need to install shelves to add on the storage space. I’d like to agree with Minipie that, if you really love for the bike area to remain as is, as I feel you might, the next best position for the utility is in the basement. The basement offers several advantages as compared to hiving off a space on G.F, especially when you consider the available space which you’d require to store all the stuff you said. I imagine sports equipment for example would need quite a generous area. I like the idea of a cosier retiring area for the library and I would really recommend an alterations for that. As for a pantry usable from the kitchen, options look really limited but I’d know what you think about moving the toilet across to the opposite void area, and then converting the new space to a pantry. It’s both proximal to the kitchen island, and will also not complicate the plumbing process, since you also want to introduce a sink in there. Hope this is useful! @Jonathan I don't dislike it either. Agree that additions of various things would make it more appealing and a heater would certainly make it nice and cozy. The side fencing will also be changed soon which will smarten it up. It's just a case of our needs at the moment with the little ones. Definitely agree with the path also. I'm not keen on where it is at the moment. Just have to decide on the shape.

I don’t have much to add apart from be honest with yourselves about how you live and what you need - will you really use a cinema room? We had a similar extension and left a small courtyard area as 123 suggested - this was mainly because we also left a side path to get into the back garden. If I’m honest with myself, my own middle room is wasted - our front room and middle rooms had been knocked through years before we bought the house. The door into the front room was blocked up and we only have the door into the middle room. It means the room is pretty much a thoroughfare but with a couple of pieces of nice furniture. We simply don’t really use that half of the room. It looks nice, and it makes the room feel spacious though... we have a gorgeous desk in their that we inherited and we have tried to make it a study space, but in reality we don’t use it for that. If I was to start again, I’ve seen a few examples on here where the middle room has been turned into a lively big utility and also a pantry space for the kitchen. I actually think for a family, that’s far more useful!

Hi there, if you think the sleepers have rotted then I would be looking to replace them with a more solid wall, brick or stone etc. possibly plant a hedge in the mid level with an end goal of removing the middle fence however that will mean yearly trimming so depends how much maintenance you want. Looks like you have two areas of hard standing on the bottom level, ideal for sheds and storage, although I’m guessing you’d like to keep kids play equipment down there. Ideally I would remove grass and put down play bark or rubber chips. Perhaps the kids would love a play house on stilts with a slide.... or..... you could even incorporate this into the main garden by having a raised deck on stilts level with the top tier then going straight out to the back fence, kinda like a viewing platform into the woods, and then have slide one side and rope climb the other. A combination of jungle gym and treetop terrace!

Hi there I think you've been given some good ideas already. Definitely replace the retaining wall this will have a massive effect on the overall look and feel of your garden. Search retaining wall photos on here and there are literally hundreds of ideas! Something as a nice focal point with steps going down to the lower level. And definitely some planting on the mid level whether grasses, shrubs or just perennial flowers would soften the look. Definitely lose the fence in the middle, and I would paint all other fences (if in good condition) dark grey to make them "fade from view".

If your kids use the trampoline that needs to be thought about where to position, as it is a large feature! Where you have the small shed at the right hand side I would build a large shed / summer house right across the width of that lower level, to maximise storage... Maybe one side could be storage, the other a play house? Or something like this that could double for both and still look pretty.

I would definitely try to incorporate the different levels with a play area built over both, here are a couple of ideas. Kids love to climb, and you have a good space to create something they will love. If you are handy its amazing what you can create without spending heaps.

And one other thing, for me gravel in a garden where there's kids is an absolute no no! They ruin it! and it goes in all the areas of the garden where you didn't want gravel! So if it was me, I would make a nice deck or patio at the back of the house for relaxing & bbq, then take up the whole of that middle bit where you currently have furniture and gravel areas, and turf the whole lot, with a path going down to the new retaining wall feature! :)
