Bathrooms Renovating Design Dilemma

Help with bathroom tile colour please

It’s house renovations time and we are extending a downstairs toilet room in to a shower room.

I have chosen the floor tile (blue Victorian porcelain) in photo. The vanity unit, shower base and toilet all white. In the corner there will be a unit housing boiler.

QUESTION IS: What type of white tile/ grout to put in shower area and how far to tile up on toilet and vanity wall.

THE LOOK I want to get is minimalistic but not cold. I don’t want it to look like a gents loo with white tiles/ grey grout.

These look similar to ours. You could try Topps tiles - honey blossom milk tile (the plain tile). There’s a grout - I think antique white - which matches both floor and wall tiles. Good luck!

IMO, grout is the bug bear here - maybe go for Mermaid/Aqua shower panelling in the shower for a shiny white look - without the possibility of grout spoiling it in time.

Hi Jane What a shame, no professional tiler would usually stick a trim over the top of the finished tiles. A good tiler should be able to mitre the edges of the tiles to create a seamless look. An alternative would be to overlap one tile over the other and polish the edge smooth but this only really looks good if the tile is a full colour bodied porcelain (same colour all the way through). As you can see from the pictures a mitred corner is by far a more superior finish that using trim. At the end of the day if he hasn't done what you asked him to do he was either being very lazy or can't achieve the finish required but if you aren't happy you should certainly ask for it to be changed, it's YOUR bathroom! Hope it all works out.

These are the tile samples I have so far. On the left - small top dark grey, under that is a tile with faux stepped marble effect tiles that are more slate toned. Large tile to the right is the mandarin stone one (v expensive, lol) The walnut in the middle I love the pattern but it’s not as rich a colour as I wanted and I can’t find anything else online in an American walnut style tile. The bottom tile is a v v pale grey with similar pattern to the mandarin stone one. How would you work these tiles together? Walnut floor and sink unit and dark grey all over the walls? Just the patterned grey on the back of the shower wall and sink area and plain grey on other walls?? :0/

Unfortunately it's almost impossible to identify tiles from a picture. There are thousands of different tile designs so you are in for a very difficult task. Tiles in the picture are ceramic tiles and are inexpensive. I can tell because of the size, most likely 30x30cm, because the edges are sharp, unfinished without bevel and because the colour is plain. The designer alternative is to use mosaics, that can provide a very stylish finish, continuous pattern and with the choice of many different colours and formats. Thank you so much - yes it seems that most go for a white look with the black so perhaps we need to consider this and add colour in other places! I like the blue above though that's nice. And perhaps it's more about going for a herringbone style or hexagon to make it feel a bit different with a white/grey tile.

I too like the shiny white tiles in the photo. Although you made me look at them again after reading your reservations about possible associations with a 'gents loo', haha, but I don't think it will look like one.

I think they can look great with a blue floor. In your photo it looks more like grey though.

Hi,

It looks like the tiles in that photo you like don't have a flat surface but a wavy one. It looks like the tiles you have samples of are either flat or flat with bevelled edges, which is quite a different look. Maybe look at some tiles which have wavy surfaces?

Have to say that I was going to go white like above but the gents toilet thing was in my mind too, along with possible discolouration of grout was the deal breaker for me, when dark grey in the end
