Hello Sumi, I would not want to recommend black curtains.. Firstly because you want to make sure that as much light is coming in... The other thing is that the walls are a nice biscuit colour you want curtains to frame the window and room not drown it... Pick out the window frames, skirting and doors with a lovely chalky colour Whitening is a favourite in eggshell for wood work and for the ceiling matt emulsion. This colour is really chalky and light... It's more interesting than white and could look really lovely.. I'd suggest getting some sample pots to see what you think... The curtains could be the fabric you are holding onto in the pic...The one that is sitting on the chair. It is subtle whilst having a bit of pattern so it will stand out with just the right amount of impact, whilst continuing the theme of geometric pattern. You could add cushions or some throws to the sofa/chairs.. You can even layer them up which look fantastic...By that I mean folded either layering over 1 arm or along the back.. This is going to tone down the bold nature of the chair and sofa. As you seem to have some geometric patterns going on - don't use the floral fabric shown in the first image for anything in this room... For the flooring... Keep it simple.. If you want a rug Tai ping do some fantastic one's -depending on the budget as they are pricey! They lent me a rug for a shoot and it was pretty high end... Take a look for inspiration and then look for something that is within your budget.. Another good place is Designers Guild- They have a good range as well.. You want this to "suggest" the colours you have chosen but you don't want pattern! It has to be simple on the eye to counter the bold pattern of the sofa/chairs.. Good accent colours are granite, charcoal, light gold and you could go for something that has shade change along the length of it... They have some fabric that you could use for the sofa/chairs as a throw, called PADUA- Slate - It's sold by the meter, so 1 or two would be more than enough.. It is really lovely and I believe they do a cushion or two... I actually think this would be perfect but... you may not like this suggestion... It just has all the right colours... I have some with me as I write, I'm going to use it as a bed spread. It's a 100% Linen and is nice to have contrast with fabrics.. This adds texture.... : ))

@pete_bon_9838, @brian_impey, synthetic = plastic in the sense you use it. Polymer. Stretchy molecules. Plastic is acceptable as a material these days, mainly because it has well proven properties in a wide range of applications across a variety of the polymers blessed by the expression. Synthetic comes across more as, hum, well, synthetic? Pretend. Not substantial. Fly-by-night. Pixel imagery without substance maybe? The best plastic decking manufacturer I am aware of uses the word plastic in its name and would not dream of using the word synthetic. Come to think of it, when describing anything of substance, neither would I. Lecture over. 'night folks. :-)

Start by taking out everything you don't want/need Paint your walls white to start with as this will give the room a fresh new feel, you can always change this if you want but you can't go wrong with white. Dulux pure brilliant white is a good choice so you don't get confused with the cold/warm undertones. Change the largest sofa for something smaller, I don't mind the other one as it is a modern style but if it is worn and you feel you need to change then now is the best time. Wool fabric is a great hard wearing choice and is easy to clean. I have children and have had mid charcoal wool fabric sofas for 4 years and they are perfect! Don't forget that your sofa is an investment so put your money into this as décor can be changed a lot cheaper! Paint the fire surround colour to a charcoal to make it stand out and also link in with the sofas NOW.... is the fun part! I'd concentrate on the red curtains and find some art work or wallpaper or a rug or cushion that you REALLY love with red in and possibly some other bright colours. Be creative & bold! I would consider changing the green curtains but by this stage you'll have a better feel of the room and where it is heading and how you want the room to look from here. If you are worried about the cost of curtains, I'd look at IKEA as you can get some lovely cheap curtains from there. Once you've got to this stage, I'd post some before pics and after pics for us on Houzz and ask for further advice on decorating as you would have a blank slate and something that you LOVE that you can work with on the colours to bring in touches of texture and warmth and comfort from there. Having enough storage makes a huge difference to a kitchen - we had ours redone in 2015 & we decided on a lot of storage, with the cupboards scribed to the ceiling (no my dust at the top of the units) as well as useable long counter tops that are practical for preparing & cooking.
