Stone wall or render?

Hello!

I was hoping for opinions on the garden wall of our new home. I personally don’t like the stone as the whole house is being re-rendered and will be hopefully looking crisp and sharp after being renovated.

With the wall do you think the stone makes a nice contrast or should I render the wall to match the house?

im really confused as not sure which would look more suited to the style of the house?

Any opinions woukd really really help? Many thanks in advance!!

Since the road looks busy I think a crisp white wall won’t stay white, will quickly look dirty and therefore brick or stone would be more forgiving

Hello, Can anyone give me some advice? I have freshly rendered walls and the renderer has told me to stabilise the walls as soon as possible. I have since been told buy a painter not to use stabiliser and I'm confused as to what to do. There is moisture coming through the walls and i want to avoid the paint blistering. I agree render would be much more high maintenance. How about modernising the stone wall somewhat by removing the irregular blocks from the top edge (if this is even possible?!) but leaving as natural stone?

yes its the stones on top that make me mostly dislike the wall?

im a little clueless and not sure if the wall would be original or is old therefore would it be unwise to make big changes to it?

I think im swaying to either taking off irregular stones from top or

putting slate cladding type tiles over the stone to make it look updated? No idea how good that would look really or if it’s doable?

Any ideas would be welcome?

I think your money will be far better spent within your boundary. It’s not as if you’re in the country where you can leisurely approach the property appreciating how it sits in the village street scene. It’s a road where you just want to get inside and tbh I would worry that modifying the wall could cause real headaches. Plus plenty will actually love the wall imo.

I love natural stone walls so I would leave it as it is. Natural stone walls are always finishing with larger top stones. Yorkshire is full of them! As already said, imagine how filthy the wall would get if it was rendered. I think the abundance of planting definitely needs thinning out. It must make the house very dark. I’m not saying chop it all down, just thin out the number of shrubs/trees. Here are a couple of examples of stone walls in thr country with larger top stones.

Just paint the gate - black or white or grey - which will make it look much smarter and more contemporary. The stone wall will then look lovely.

Lovely house! As others have said, I would keep the stones wall: it’s full of charm and the contrast with your future freshly painted house will be very aesthetic! I would really cut back the shrubs as Forzaitalia suggested... maybe cut them in neat shapes if you are after a very ‘clean and sharp ‘ exterior. Is that a cedar tree?
If you love slate, you could have one with your house number on it, fixed near the gate. Keep us posted!

I think natural stone, suits the house. Also, most of the houses seem to have the same wall on that road, like they're almost one continuous wall with driveways in between. You may not get permission to change it.

Fantastic thAnna everyone. Certainly given me food for thought.

Yes met with tree surgeons to get trees tidied up and shrubs sorted out which I hoping with make it all look neater.

I love the suggestion of getting gate painted which never occurred to me all.

Thanks all.... I’m sure I will be back shortly just before we get rendering done for lots more design advice!
