Rogue trader advice

I ordered a frameless glass window seat from The Architectural Glazing Company in October and was pressured to pay a 50% cash deposit. They wanted a 100% which should have set alarm bells ringing then.

I still had no window after weeks of chasing Barry (which was extremely stressful in itself), so a refund was agreed as he couldn’t deliver the window in the agreed timescales.

4 weeks later still no refund. We’ve tried everything to be amicable but keep being fobbed off by this guy.

I’m heavily pregnant with s one year old but even that doesn’t seem to be enough to get him to do the right thing.

Any advice about where to go when dealing with rogue traders please?

A solicitors letter might be worth a try ? ( preferably hand delivered by Tyson Fury ! )
Stating a the agreed refund needs to be made with X days or you will be taking them to court and reporting them to trading standards?

Pressurised into pay a deposit......?????
As a bespoke item you would expected to pay at least 50% deposit and you should have expected that it would take time to manufacture.

It’s very good that they have offered to refund the money- that’s not the norm when you pay a deposit for a bespoke item- normally you would have lost that money for cancelling your order.

The issue is just that they haven’t refunded the money as fast as you want but the reality is that small businesses generally only do accounts once a month.

A solicitors letter will cost you money, likely £150 that could be avoided. There are alternative ways of chasing this refund. Firstly if you paid on a credit card you can get your credit card company to chase it. You could politely remind the company by email or recorded delivery letter that the refund has been agreed- the advice about stating a timescale for action is spot on- a letter to the company seems more civilised that rubbishing them on a public forum. If you remain unsuccessful you can claim this back through a small claims court which you can do online, won’t need a solicitor and has minimal cost.

Laminate: CONS – Laminate flooring doesn’t repair easily. If you buy flooring that comes in individual pieces and snapped together, you may be able to replace. Behind your range i'd use a stainless steel sheet, Ebay's cheap, but just google stainless steel sheet, available cut to size all over the place. This one for instance is quite a size 2000mmx1000mm Ebay ( Stainless Sheet ). You can then use the car paint and the metal will take the heat as will the paint. Or to go with your colour scheme how about Copper?? copper sheet ( Ebay ) Plain Or, take a blow torch to it for patina??Copper patina sheet glass available from a trader on Houzz [Glass Splashback[(https://www.houzz.co.uk/products/copper-patina-glass-splashback-60x60-cm-prvw-vr~87224336)

@rach1922 - you are quite right that people harvesting Indian sandstone were exploited, as well as the use of child labour. For this very reason many UK suppliers have installed their own staff in their own quarries to ensure this does not happen. So basically there are companies who have total control to ensure the Stone is ethically harvested, such as Marshall’s, London Stone etc. I used Global Stone who supply many builders merchants. Sadly, we as a society exploit many people in many countries so that we can enjoy cheap clothing etc. It’s a minefield.

Small claims court is cheapest option. Keep records of all correspondence for the court case. If this company is definitely a rogue trader then you can report them to Trading Standards via Citizens Advice Bureau. i did this with an online garden business who are shockingly selling rubbish poor quality goods. Luckily I paid by Paypal so got my money back. They are still trading though, so much for Trading Standards! Hope you get it sorted soon.
