Opening up this kitchen/dining area

Hi
I would love some advice on how this space could be opened up. it's clear this wall is quite solid and may be load bearing and the gas is on the wall adjoining the dining area...

Thoughts desperately needed as we embark on this journey!

We’ve just knocked down our walls and our previous house had a similar layout to yours.
Supporting wall will likely need a steel in place of the wall but it’s not massive.
Gas isn’t an issue as it be diverted under the floor or cut back to where your new hob will be

Would look great with French doors out onto the patio as well

Get a reputable builder over for estimates first. Structural engineer would be needed once you go ahead to calculate the steel size.

Building regs is needed for the steels. Might do for the patio doors if you make the opening larger ie for the lintel.

Although this will feel lots bigger it won’t actually be bigger and at the moment I see a wall of kitchen cabinets on one side of the wall and a side board on the other. Before you go ahead make sure the finished room will have enough storage for you as the current layout is efficient.

Hello Jeannette, what a lovely project! I've worked on a number of bungalows and they have their own unique challenges. Making the spaces work for our needs today, and for your own family needs have to be the priorities. I would suggest you appoint an interior designer before thinking in detail about the kitchen. An interior designer will find out how you want to use the space and come up with clever floor plan that is workable and beautiful. This is going to be a really important investment for you. I'm doing all I can to stop it from crashing but no luck yet! I've lengthened the island from 3.2M to 3.6M to increase the storage for the kitchen but agree the island should be moved down slightly. I'd like a really large seating area but will have a play around to see how I can make this area work better as the settee is a little bit close to the island! I've always wanted a formal seating area and will have the space to do this but may be able to get away with 2 settees rather than the 3 I had my heart set on!! I'd put the TV on that wall so I could see it when I was in the kitchen cooking! But it would be better placed on the other wall for people sat at the Island to see. Your points are so helpful! This is the most productive day I've had in a while!! And I've just watched the George Clarke show 'Ugly House to Lovely House' to see the Crittall windows and I love them!

Our house is almost identical in layout to the last picture above with the glass roofed conservatory, all open plan. We use the conservatory for the dining area, we have a little 'snug' area at the rear and and adjacent to that is the kitchen, and 'L' shape. Our conservatory just happens to be on the left not the right. We have a glass roof ( thermal - like this Thermo Glass ) and, not it's not cold. We have one radiator in the snug adjacent to the kitchen and one in the conservatory. The one in the conservatory is and electric one with a thermostat and only comes on if the other rad can't heat the 3 areas on it's own. This only comes on when it's particularly cold. We used to have a Twin wall type roof, and yes that was pretty chilly which is why we changed to the glass. We do have very heavy weight curtains that pull round the conservatory in the winter months to help with the cold coming through the glass windows as they are not thermal glass. I would add, that our conservatory has been up for around 20 years and 'posh' glass was not available in those days, so your glass may well have better insulating properties! Hello Colourwise Design, Thought I would give you a visual of what I had meant. I have used Jonathan's drawing as I use sketchup personally for spatial drawings in 3D. However this means you get to see the same kind of view though with his design and scale. Also offers me the chance to show you how the materials can effect the overall appearance as I have deliberately chosen a material colour to blend with the flooring (or as close to so you can see what is solid) which can be done in a myriad of ways so things appear less solid and thus give a more open room configuration ... Have copied Jonathan's chairs which I have slid under a little more. So you have flow and a very simple configuration which does not hinder the exit to the garden which I think you will want to retain personally. So it could be that the first section houses sink, dishwasher. FF could be in left corner where room opens out? Hob could be at dining end. So cook and serve idea. This also allows for the additional room where the area widens. You still have flow between task oriented routes ie sink to ff and ff to hob etc. Making use of height with a single width double ff and perhaps considering a wall oven and some wall hung cupboards on that wall to the right of the image. The dresser might be able to situate to the right of the window on the left of the image. Down draft on hob or overhead extraction and ceiling hung pans or a section underneath hob for pans etc.. So this idea could either be solid with build in cupboards which I would propose have sliding doors or at dining end taper off into a table top.. Its a quick rework to show you what I had envisioned as I saw it. Re the door in to kitchen, perhaps consider a door that is sliding for example a pocket door. : ))

@Jonathan thanks for the awesome visualisation and completely understand - we were thinking of having a small island to and actually keeping the hallway door - but really like your thinking as well (didn't think about that layout!)
