So here is the fireplace from the sofa opposite. Yes, you are right this is an Edwardian house, in the Arts and Crafts style. The wood throughout the downstairs is unpainted cedar, including all window frames, panelling, skirting and picture rails. It looks amazing when it's oiled, it has tiger stripes through it! So, if I painted the beams, they would be the only painted wood in the main house ( kitchen areas and upstairs and attic rooms are painted ). The room is South facing with two big bays, the one on the left of the fireplace has a window seat. This room is bright in the daylight but really gloomy at night. We have 4 wall lights at either end, 3 picture lights and a light over the fireplace. This room has a lot of potential but we just have never bothered to pay attention to it. Too busy bringing up children! I would really like this room to turn into something splendid, but comfortable.

In terms of design, you have some great ideas in your Ideabook particularly the living ones by Boscolo Design. I would personally go for similar sofas in a light colour with black piping for a subtler Art Deco feel. If not maybe a plain sofa with a couple of velvet occasional club chairs. Maybe up the art deco look by adding a mirrored console table, Laura Ashley have a couple suitable. You could also add geometric or a subtle animal print for fabrics. I'd add a big hollywood style mirror for a glamorous look. You obviously favour the monochrome look so go for off whites or very pale grey on the walls. Maybe some pale curtains with a black trim. Are you putting in new flooring in the lounge? If so would parquet be in budget or try karndean parquet? If not, maybe add a subtle geometric rug. I like One Plans idea re the mirror in the kitchen and very in keeping with the style. You seem to know exactly what look you're trying to achieve so are just after actual shopping suggestions?

Thank you for your suggestions. I think we would like a very big piece of art or two side by side on the wall next to the sofa. Like those mirrors but not sure where it could fit. Like the idea of dusty pale pink. I think we definitely need some patterns to bring a bit of energy in the room! Have you got any suggestions on good places to buy upholstery material? My mother in law is going to make us some bespoke cushions (she’s amazingly creative!) Do you think abstract art would work best?
