wallpaper over wallpaper

Hi all, we’re temporarily sprucing up our dining room (we plan on extending in a couple of years so this room will then be obsolete).

The walls currently have a lightly textured wallpaper (see image), can we simply cover this with a thick lining paper and then paint?

Hello Jack from pro-coat painting here, personally I would take the paper off and start again, although it is a light pattern it could still show through resulting in you wasting your time and money, but at the end of the day it's your call.

Even a heavy lining paper will notake a good job over a textured paper, plus the existing paper may bubble compounding the problem. Hire a steamsteam stripper and have done with it.

A belated THANK YOU to everyone who commented. This is the final result. We're super happy with it. Room A north facing "through-lounge" in a new build, 3 bed semi detached house Paint Walls: Purbeck Stone, Farrow & Ball Ceiling: Strong White, Farrow & Ball By the way, the room isn't as long and skinny as it looks in the photos. Painting it all one colour actually made it feel much, much larger. We were really impressed with the quality of advice the F&B staff gave us in regards to colour. We loved Purbeck Stone from the minute we saw it, and being brave really paid off.

Thank you Tani, good tip there with wet sponge. And Yes Vintage Jazz the wallpaper is coming off. I understand why the reflective qualities are a positive but the 'glamorous' look isn't really our style. David and I are preferring mixing vintage with new, perhaps a bit Scandi. Don't think this paper will work too well with a rustic table and mix matched Eames chairs. Yes it is a beautiful room and I can't wait to get my hands on it! :)

I think it may be overpowering , you can paint the walls a sand beige colour, or a colour picked out in the tones of the wallpaper, then have that walpaper as a feature wall behind the bed.

Steve, I would line the walls after rigourous preparation work. One thing you could do is cross line the walls. Basically this is to make good the walls with easi-fill (with the woodchip paper off), rub down and size the walls with a thinned out coat of paste. Let the size dry fully and hang lining paper either vertically or horizontally. Once hung and dried, look at the condition of the walls re-fill the bad areas again and rub down. Just size the filled areas only and then re-line the walls in the crossed direction of the first hang. So if you hung vertically on the first, hang horizontally on the second hang and vice versa. Once complete paint as normal. You should see a marked difference in the smoothness of the walls,

Agree with above comments. If you did use a heavy duty lining paper it would need to be applied horizontally but even then you may get problems of the texture showing through, unevenness at the joins where it won’t adhere because of the texture, bubbles or lifting because of the extra layers, and it might make it difficult to remove later on because of the extra adhesive and paint. I would either paint with a trade Matt paint so the texture is not so obvious or strip and re do.
