Kitchen design comments
Hi all, we're just starting our interior planning for some planning permission that we've just been granted on our home in the Yorkshire Dales. We're going to be remodelling the kitchen, utility room, boiler room, entrance hall and creating a new bedroom and bathroom upstairs.
For now, I'm hoping that people can provide some comments on the kitchen design that we've created on DIY kitchens and have marked up with PowerPoint!

It would be better not to position the hob on the island as mentioned by OnePlan maybe instead have the sink on the island and the hob where your sink currently is. there is space on the right handside wall where you can have the sink also If you prefer to add it there.
I hope you get some ideas form the photos posted ...

Comments (18)Sorry- I don’t like your plan. In my opinion the space between the sink and hob is where the work happens so you are actually a bit tight for space. I think the door from the kitchen to the playroom is a massive fail- firstly you are inviting the kids to run past the cooking area, secondly is splits the kitchen and there are safety implication for having a walkway through the kitchen, I also think it makes your kitchen plan feel disjointed. I also think that if the children are young they won’t want to be in the playroom, they will want to be where you are. If you are worried about the playroom being dark this is easily sorted with better lighting and a pale coloured floor. Alternatively make this the grown up room and the kids playroom near the front door. I also think that putting the sitting area around the corner in the extension makes it feel enclosed and a little tight because of its location. I think you have put too many stools at the island and in reality people rarely use more than 3. In my opinion better to have fewer comfortable seats that are spread out with room to eat. I also think you missed an opportunity to have a cupboard near the front door to hide coats, shoes and a vacuum cleaner. I think that if you want an extra shower it may be easier to put this off the bootroom- a bigger utility/ bootroom area may help later to keep sports equipment/ dogs/ ironing etc etc out of sight. There is a privacy argument to put it where you have but I suspect the wall you have moved to take a corner off the kitchen is a job that will require a steel....See MoreAny comments on my bedroom design?
Comments (2)I guess the drawing is not to scale but on your drawing it looks like there is a very narrow gap between bed and wardrobe - if it’s going to be that narrow in real life I would reconsider the layout (perhaps wardrobes on the current bedhead wall and bed facing the windows). As regards colours, navy grey and silver is a nice combination but very cool toned. Which way does the room face? If it’s not south you might want to add some warmth - eg wood and/or pink accents would add warmth and fit with the other colours. Comments (6)Sorry, I should have explained a little bit more. These are old units that I am simply moving. They are in very good condition. I have no problem with abandoning or not using some of the units. @ Jonathan that looks good. My intention is to get a 2400mm island as well. However, need to get these in first! @ Ellie I will do so when I have a chance a little later on! Thank you. The diagram I put up first shows the area where the units will go along with the window at the top. @rinq the larders are very tall. From memory they are approx 2.1m high. They both have openings of 1050mm for appliances. I havnt enquired about additional units but I'd much rather make the best out of what I have....See More

- 7 years agoRegarding your question about keeping it tidy around the sink. Personally I think there is no need for plates to ever sit on the side - why not put them straight into the dishwasher? As far as cleaning supplies- put them under the sink- frankly with a dish washer you don’t need the washing up liquid that often.
Having said that a friend decanted her washing up liquid into a soap dispenser which does look quite nice by the side of the sink with a matching one for hand soap.
