Planted roof?

Would love to know what the plants are on the roof and how it drains! I need this on my pergola.

The green roof is made up of Sedum, they come in crates which can be placed onto the roof membrane so the drainage would be at the back using a gutter like any normal flat roof.

Hi Suzanne, I would consider artificial grass/decking for your rooftop. As in future this can, of course, be used as a terrace and would look great with a balustrade, furniture, and plants etc. Nothing to lose really, as you'll have some extra space to use in the summer and in the winter when the gardens get muddy. @KerryBryanInteriors

Hi Daniel, The bearing of your property should not inhibit your ability to have a green roof, generally it just requires different varieties of plants which can thrive in shade to be used. I have no expertise in the type of plants which can be used but a good green roof supplier will be able to advise you on this. There are a couple of other things to also consider. Firstly the thickness of the roof will be thicker than conventional roofs and the structure will likely need to be bolstered to accommodate the additional load of this. Secondly consider the access and maintenance of the roof. Visually, green roofs can be a great design addition when done well, and can really enhance the thermal performance of your property helping it to retain heat in the winter and keep cool in summer. Consult a structural engineer to check the roof is strong enough to be used as a garden. Find out if it can take the weight of plants and furniture and people and what the limits will have to be.
