Balcony Inspo Needed
Hi Everyone, I've got an inset glass fronted balcony but have absolutely no idea what to do with it. Length is 2.5metres and depth is 1metre. Balcony is NE facing (not the best I know)
I live in London and miss greenery so ideally want to make this tiny space a green oasis. I was thinking a living wall mounted on the wooden wall since the balcony door opens onto the space that side. But that's as far as I've gotten.
Also need to be mindful of neighbours below and foliage shedding onto their balcony which isn't inset.
All suggestions most welcome!

4 years agoGreat idea. I think two trellis/wooden planters would look good either side (see pic below) which you can plant up with evergreens like bamboo, skimmia and ferns with a few annuals for colour such as begonias and bizzie Lizzies (Impatients) - they don’t survive our winters but give a great display during the summer. I’ve never done a living wall so not sure how well plants grow in them. There are loads more plants that like shade but this is a start!

4 years agoI can't use a planter against the wooden wall because the door opens on to the balcony. That's why I was thinking of a living wall (see photo). That said I've never created a living wall either - how hard can it be ;)
I could definitely use the planter at the other end and hadn't actually considered this! I think it's a great idea and I love the plant suggestions too, particularly the evergreens, thank you!

Comments (5)I have the following suggestions to improve the usable space and add some storage. Use deck chairs, they are comfortable and don't take up much space, when not in use they can hang on a wall outside. If you converted the patio doors to bi-fold door you would have more space on the balcony. This would allow for shelves on pillars to left and right. These shelves could be used for potted herbs, plant mint and make your own home grown Mojito. In the alcoves I suggest that two raised beds, these could have storage underneath. Again they could be used for herbs or grasses which do well on roof gardens and balconies. Put them on casters if there is glass behind that needs to be cleaned. If you use same material on balcony as the lounge, it will give the impression that the balcony is part of the lounge and vice versa. Comments (2)A continuous 3 glass screen isnt a great option at all - it will have to be super heavy and thick to not bend. You can easily subdivide it into at least 2 sections, it will substantially lower the price as well. I assume the locations for the fixings of the posts have been discussed with the engineer, so that they sit and are fixed to the structure? As for alternative materials for the balustrade - personally we haven't ever done it in timber, most clients prefer glass (on metal posts) or metal - the latter is much cheaper, but glass is nicer. 4 years agoHow much space do you have behind the door? some standing shelving might be quite useful and pretty. That way you always can change or add plants, plant-pots, decorations, lights etc. It’s good to store a pretty gardening tools.
