Hi, I'm of the same ilk as The Bulb co above, not a natural born gardener but clean and tidy with a few feature plants is great. A couple of plants that perform well for me, (mainly because i don't have to do anything are), 'red robin' and the Pieris Japonica which is the red one you have in the front garden by the looks of things. Both are evergreen and take very little care, well in my garden anyway. An occasional cut of the red robin keeps new growth coming through red. About once a year. If you can move the light a little further to the right as you look at the house it's let you show off the architectural detail of your doorway a little better. Finally your home is pretty, it's looks well built and honest and that has a charm that many modern homes lack. If you're laying engineered boards you'll find that some manufacturers make them in a couple of different qualities and thicknesses. If the top finish of two thicknesses was similar you could mix and match and use a spot of screed to make the adjustment. If it's also in front of a doorway still, could you use a doormat to hide any discrepancies?

I have a step down into my kitchen off the living/dining rooms- we live on a steep hill and it seems to have been part of the design around that, the neighbours have the same. The only time it became an issue was when the children were learning to walk! But this was a short window of time, and it was actually not a bad thing for them to have an obstacle into the kitchen danger zone. They quickly learnt how to get down it! Other than that it has not been a problem for us, nor any of the guests we (used to)have. It didn't put us off buying it, and we have recently sold on with plenty of interest. The steps down into the garden did annoy me however.

Probably not much help and apologies I got lost after the 'slope to the edge and the stairs..'....You could call up few loft companies, ask them to come round, get some quotes and discuss your concerns. Some of them go up and look at the loft space, some don't if it's a standard build and they have done similar projects before. A lot of them work with an architect and they can advise you how to get your extra 2cm to pass the building regs ( it could be raising the roof height or doing some reconfiguration ).
