Personally I'm not a carpet fan and would love wood floors throughout. You/people can always put a large rug in the bedroom if they want something soft underfoot. We have wood flooring (ok so it's laminate but we are selling next year and won't reclaim money spent on real wood floors!) all downstairs but need carpet on the stairs due to rubbish treads. Also going for carpet in one bedroom as it's cheaper and we are running out of funds, ha ha. A lot of people like carpet in the bedrooms though so it depends if you are doing it for yourself or to sell? Hardwood wouldn't be overkill though - especially if you are tiling in other places

How about some Swedish soap: https://www.ocado.com/webshop/product/Grumme-Gron-Sapa--Liquid-Green-Floor-Soap/79232011 I was chatting to a Swedish couple at a show recently and apparently they don't bother with oil or varnish for their woodwork, including the floors, they just use this special soap.

If they are real hard wood (or even a very thick engineered) you would probably be able to sand them down and re-varnish (depending if, or how many times it had been done before and their general condition). A decent flooring company would be able to give you a good opinion. I've sanded a lot of floors and they have always turned out well, just take care picking the colour of the final varnish as I've found that they tend to be quite orangey.
