Orginal hardwood floors

Hi there,
My house is filled with original 1920s hard wood some parquet and other just boards. I absolutely love it but it seems gray in spots and in others the varnish has chipped off. In the future I plan to rent a floor sander and revarnish, but in the short term can anyone give me good tips for cleaning and making the old floor look it's best?

How about some Swedish soap:

I was chatting to a Swedish couple at a show recently and apparently they don't bother with oil or varnish for their woodwork, including the floors, they just use this special soap.

Hi Elaine, Our suggestion is, do not try because whatever you do will be worse. You can damage the wood flooring this way, then it will be hard to restore to original condition. Woodcraft Flooring has oiled wood flooring by hand for 30 years. We combine colours and stains we have tried before to make Mahogany lighter this did not work and therefore we had to restore the floor. You can restore the floor back to new that is what I suggest to do if your floor is looking old or in a bad state. Thank you Kind Regards Mursel

Just a personal preference, I like option 2 as it keeps a nice flow of the lines of the floor between the bedroom and landing. Also when you walk up to the top of the stairs you see nice long lines of the floorboards rather than short lines going across if you go for option 1. In option 2, the only 'short' lines you will be seeing in the landing is the the small section directly behind the turning at the top of the stairs and bedroom (2.7mx2.3m).

I'm not sure what OP intends to do. Replace? Add something on top like a rug? Yes, if the current flooring is real wood I'd certainly consider working with it. You can then still add rugs.
