should I paint the tiles white?

Temporary renovation job until I can afford to redo the kitchen completely. Currently sorting the ceiling after,polystyrene tile removal.

It depends how much the current tiles bother you! They are quite dated but if you are going to redo your kitchen within a couple of years then I don't think I would bother. I have the same dilemma with ghastly tiles in my two year old bathroom. I have decided to put up with them until we replace them. Painting that expanse of tiles is quite a job for very little gain if you are going to rip them out.

Yes, I think I’d leave them for now. Once the cooker goes back in you could perhaps fix a stainless steel splash back which will cover a large section, and you can hardly see them anyway where your kettle, toaster etc are. Good work on removal of the ceiling tiles though. It already looks much better!

It does not require it but you would need to clean really well to get an even and clean covering. It usually needs more than one coat I find.. but you will need to see dependent on the colouring. It can be OK but only as a temporary fix and you need to take your time and do it properly as mistakes are really hard to change once you start painting - a run in it for example. It then also very noticeable. Personally if you hate it and it doesn't go with the new room your starting to create then I think go for it. It's a cost effective way to make you happy until you can change it later. I appreciate you can not see too well on the picture but these black tiles in this photo have been painted as the client was on a very tight budget and didn't want to rip the bright green ones off and start again! http://www.createperfect.co.uk/press?lightbox=dataItem-iqwcsy178 All the best, Gina

Hi! I would use a Color Muse to measure the colour attributes of your flagged floor and then choose a colour, which relates to the hue family to which the flooring belongs. Then all you need decide, is whether you prefer the wall colour to be darker or lighter, but knowing that it will coordinate with the flagged floor.

I think painting the tiles may be worth doing, or stick on tiles as kazzh suggests. Saw this done on a renovation programme and it looked very good. Your tiles are pretty ghastly 😊

Looks so much better already losing the ceiling tiles. I would definitely paint over existing tiles check out Zinsser products they do great primers and then paint over with colour of choice and maybe add a splashback behind cooker as Sonia suggested.

Decided to paint over! Good shout on Zinnseer. I ended up using V33 tile paint as was using it for bathroom. Then plan to probably add some sort of splash back behind - hadn’t thought of that before! Will post pics if anyone’s curious on how tiles painted come out.

White high gloss kickers might work. If you don't like that idea then maybe a metallic effect. You could also try and match the units. I didn't realise they were missing, I thought they were black!

They are black! I’m just not sure I’m a big fan of the black with the colour of the floor.

The black is unobtrusive though and receedes. It's not really something you want to make a feature of. Metallic is probably your least in your face choice. I like them matching the endpanels and units. White might work as there is a lot more white in your kitchen now. Great job painting those dated tiles!

Perhaps I’ll wait until tiles are finished and reassess and I’ll clean the black/apply another coat.

What an improvement already! I do think you should paint the kickboards to blend them in better with the floor. You won’t be able to match the wood cupboards per se (although you could try a wood patterned adhesive vinyl … no one will look at it close up!), so maybe

Maybe a deep purpley brown like farrow and a ball Brinjal, or perhaps an olive green colour. I would look to coordinate with other colour elements in your room, keeping it mid to dark in tone, but not so dark they look like they are missing.

You could replace the plinths with lengths of pine. That's what I did in a previous kitchen with wood effect units. After I replaced the flooring, the old plinths no longer fitted. I just left the pine natural since it wasn't very noticeable. You could of course, just paint your existing plinths in a woody colour. I'd paint the white sides of the wall units too. The painted tiles look good.

Well we can now say that painting tiles is definitely a great budget option! Looks fab. What paint did you use? The plinths could be painted to coordinate with the wooden units, but I really like Sarah’s suggestion of using pine and Kimberley’s vinyl idea.

I used V33 tile paint. Required three coats but with no priming or undercoating.
My plan is to re-vinyl the counter tops.

I think olive green is probably my preferred colour for plinth as suggested above +/- the white end unit panels

It’s looking great. I hadn’t registered the white end panels at first but I agree they could be improved. You could try putting white shelves between them, either end to end “fitted” or (perhaps better yet) centred across 70-80% of the gap between cupboards. Choosing the unfitted option also means you can go with shallower shelves, too. And perhaps two shelves, with the top one being a bit shorter.

Have a look at the IKEA Bergshult board, as it has a grooved edge that might look great. Choosing white shelves will make the white sides of your cupboard look intended, will blend in well with your new painted tiles, and you can style them to suit your kitchen.

Honestly paint the tiles, put a splashback in behind the cooker, and paint the cupboards/kickboards yourself or if budget allows get someone else to do it! I did exact same for my dated kitchen, and won’t be changing it any time soon ;-D
