Powder bathroom lighting
My questions concern the lighting and switch in a powder bathroom which will also be a guest bathroom (it has a shower). The overall size is 8.5' x 5.5'. For lighting there will be 1) a sconce on either side of the vanity mirror, 2) two recessed lights in the ceiling: one between the door and the vanity and the other one in the shower 3) there will also be a fan above the toilet. Questions: Would you have a two gang switch where all the lights are turned on (sconces, ceiling and shower) and then the fan or would it be better to have a three gang switch on the wall (sconces, ceiling/shower, fan)? If 3 gang, what order should the switches be? My thought is sconces, fan, ceiling. In other words, is it weird to turn on the light in the shower when you're not in there to take a shower.
The other question is: will the ceiling light in front of the vanity cast a bad shadow from behind when standing in front of the mirror. We could move it over one bay so it is located between the vanity and the toilet if that is an issue.

Comments (29)Hi Tommy-LEE, both the light and dark tiles you’ve shown look very good. My old bathroom, I put in dark grey whilst my bathroom now, I’ve got light grey. Both bathrooms have a lot of light and light and dark both worked well. The biggest difference for me is actually maintenance as in how dirt and watermark shows up. We’re a barefoot household with two dogs and I like to maintain almost like a 5 star hotel. Somehow light grey doesn’t show up dirt as much when we vacuum just once a week. With the dark grey tiles, I had to vacuum more frequently, which isn’t great as I work long hours during the week. Apart from the colour, the difference between the tiles is that the dark tiles we had was smooth and light one we’ve now is more concrete like with texture. That might be a reason. Comments (4)Thanks pjbell! My first thought was 'no way, we use bedroom 2 and can't lose it - far too radical'. But then I stopped and looked and actually, that may well be worth considering! All bedrooms are in use - bedroom 2 is our studio/craft room/office. Kids are in the back bedroom and top floor. I've got my heart set on an en-suite and keeping our large bedroom but have been mindful of making the studio too small so was opting for a small shower room. I've been pondering if there is anything we could do to have a larger family bathroom but couldn't see how. This could give a large family bathroom and more luxurious en-suite. The back room is south facing so would be much better for a studio - its worth seeing the size if we split into two bedrooms. I do like the fact that all bedrooms are decent doubles and wouldn't want them much smaller. We are going to be here for the next 10-15 years and will then look to downsize when the kids have flown the nest. This will be the only major work we'll do so although it needs to be right for us, I also want it to be as appealing as possible to the next family.
