what colour windows?

we are getting our existing white timber windows replaced as well as having an extension. The extension will have bifolds and we are considering them in either anthracite or black. They will all be aluminium with slim frames. What do people think about anthracite or black for the rest of the house?

This photo shows a very similar house with anthracite windows. We have the same combination of tile and brick. Do people think this looks ok or would white or black be better? We don't want to put people off when we come to resell.

What about internally? I am tempted to go white internally with just anthracite in the more modern extension. What do people think?

Although I think Black will work my preference would be to have pale windows. To feel like you have personalised the house you could consider cream/taupe/ pale grey/ soft green instead of white. I would definitely choose white inside.
However for me the style of the windows is more important than colour. Sometimes people choose windows that are too plain or too contemporary for their house and in my opinion that’s an expensive mistake.

Black or anthracite would both look good, but black is classic and looks really good with brick. I would only have white inside.

Love black windows which were very popular in the 30s. I think black looks very smart inside as well. What era is your house? Do you have a picture of yours?

White windows, colour co-ordinated front door and garage would look nice. There are so many options with window frame colour and anthracite is just one of them. Your house looks 1980s but quite a traditional design. French Grey would look amazing (a slightly greeny grey). Last pic below is a window painted in Farrow & Ball’s French Grey, but it does look quite traditional, so probably not your cup of tea!

I actually really like it as it is. It's one of those situations where you could regret chaining it so it needs some serious thought. If the windows are in really good condition then are you planning on just planting them or totally replacing them? White or even off white windows I feel work less well than the colour you have now. If you were to change both then you could go for a very pale stone coloured render with slightly darker windows. I have seen this on lots of similar houses in Essex villages not far from here. Personally I love a dirty pinky brown on houses like this, which would also work with your current window colour.

I think anthracite grey will be absolutely perfect. It will match the roof tiles. I once updated the rear windows of a red brick Edwardian house with anthracite grey powder coated new windows. A dark grey planter with some greenery either side of the front door would lift it. Bay trees or something similar.

What a lovely house. It looks very Arts & Crafts in style. You’d never know it’s a 90s house. Black would look amazing!

Thanks both. I was considering black at the rear and white at the front, what do you think? All the neighbours are white and am not sure if I am brave enough to go black at the front.

Regarding style we will probably copy the existing but remove the horizontal bar as the views are lovely and it is at eye level. We are also planning to remove the cladding around the dormer and replace with the same hanging tile which is cuurently on the sides of the dormer.

Unfortunately a colour other than black, grey or anthricite is not an option due to cost. We will have white internally except on the extension which will be a more modern open plan space with white walls.

I’m showing my age, but I think your house looks lovely with white casement windows. I like dark on white render and modern extensions, and as bifolds, but I think they can look depressing on front brick elevations.

I would use a Color Muse to measure the colour of your brick, plot where the brick lies on the colour wheel and then find a related colour,,,It would take only a few minutes. I will try and find an example,,
