What colour windows for my 1970's red brick house

Please can you help, we are wanting to change our windows from brown to either light grey/green or dark grey but undecided which colour goes with our red brick house? We will also be changing the front door, soffits, gutters and will paint the garage door but I wonder how everything will match up and would it look too dark in antrhacite grey? I'm also slightly worried about the lighter grey colour as I haven't seen many houses with this and not sure I'll go off it! Does anyone have a similar style house which they have updated and could share any pictures o

r does anyone know how I could do a mock up of the colour. I've seen it mentioned on here but yet to find any site which can help. Thank you. Picture attached.

I think anthracite grey will be absolutely perfect. It will match the roof tiles. I once updated the rear windows of a red brick Edwardian house with anthracite grey powder coated new windows. A dark grey planter with some greenery either side of the front door would lift it. Bay trees or something similar.

I think anthracite grey looks a bit dingy with red brick, see below. I would choose classic white. It will lighten the whole frontage and give it a lift.

Just another opinion...I like the suggestion that others posted to remove the bush and if possible, to put entry door in it's place, to remove the post and replace it with a support beam and brackets, replace garage door, add low wall to separate your driveway from the neighbor's, plant a dwarf tree in the front yard along with some edging plants... But with so many possibilities to choose from, perhaps you could accomplish your desire to make your home stand out from the others inexpensively by...painting over the white part of the house, the downspout directly above the canopy and the garage door to match the lightest brick color. Choose the darkest brick color for all of the other trim and windows. Patch and seal the driveway to freshen it (until you know if you will be permitted to do anything more permanent), definitely taking out the bush and doing some low cost planting just to add some color. It takes time to settle on your needs, style, budget, etc. But it's worthwhile to spend a little cash and effort to get a bit of satisfaction that things are looking better!

Hi Stacy. I think weatherboarding will work for the look you're after. Would you paint it all one colour? My only worry was whether it would all be a bit one dimensional and whether the boarding would make the ground floor look lower ( I've drawn it out though and it doesn't seem to make any difference but that could be my lack of drawing skills!) I wonder if you could add a porch with weatherboard like this with either side of the front rendered and painted? The porch doesn't have to be as complex/expensive as this with the steps etc. I've had a similar size ŵall rendered and it was about £150 from memory so the cost would really be for the porch. Can you or your husband draw? Hi Greg, I think the windows definitely need to change. Casement does seem like a good option as it gives you more glass and are affordable. You could go for some powder coated aluminium to match the garage? but this is a much higher price. The door is a nice touch and I personally like them but it really depends on the style you are going for with your interiors (and exteriors) and whether this is in keeping with that. Is it something you need? and if not.. will it really support the style you are going for? I think it is hard to give too much advise because I don't really know what you are trying to achieve at this point. I think the big decision for the OP is whether he wants his house to be sympathetic to the period houses around him or to go totally contemporary, as in some of the really inspiring images above. Aside from personal aesthetic inclinations, this decision is related to caring about what the neighbors think, as some may dislike a contemporary interruption in the otherwise stylistically cohesive neighborhood (and of course some will love it if it is done well!), whereas the kinds of changes in the first three images posted above by Jonathan are not likely to offend anyone. There may be also be considerations related to resale. In a neighborhood where all the houses are like the OP's place, I wouldn't hesitate to go contemporary, and my guess is that many others would also be going that way, but his house is a relatively recent infill in an old established strip.

I agree with Sonia…… I worry that if the windows are the eyes of the house a dark colour window could give the look of the morning after. I would favour a light colour

I also vote for white or light coloured window frames. Anthracite frames almost never look good with red brickwork.
