Fireplace solution needed
I have a dilemma regarding my existing fireplace. It is not to my taste (although my OH quite likes it) nor is it vintage 1920s as is the small cottage style house. However I do wish to keep the fireplace and be able to continue having an occasional fire in the hearth.
If we take it out it will probably require a lot of making good. The question is how to make a new very simple fireplace and hearth without spending a fortune or years trotting round reclamation yards?

Comments (12)The lowest cost way to sort this problem is to dig yourself a small pond and bog garden area in front of the shed. If you dig a metre deep hole and shelve it up to the edges and put a liner to about 5 cm below the surface of your lawn it will act as a sump and the water will go that way (you can cover the edge of the liner with turf you have removed to cover it up). Don't put fish in, let the frogs and newts find their own way and also gives you the fun of watching birds and other creatures drinking from the shallow edges. Then plant big bog plants like purple loosestrife next to it, they will soon grow to block the view of the shed. This is purple loosestrife, very pretty, tall and easy to grow. Comments (2)I got a local steel fabricator/fitter to make an internal steel window partition, sourced the steel from a company in Manchester I think, painted frame black myself and got another local glass guy to install glass, whole cost was approximately 1/3 of what I was quoted by specialist steel window makers. 4 years agoAt first I thought it may be marble, but Ive not seen a fireplace made out of, what look like, marble tiles? Or terrazzo tiles? You could upcycle it with paint and tiles as already suggested. Here’s some ideas, but I just couldn’t find an image the same as your fireplace exactly, which makes me feel it’s a diy build. It’s dirty cream colour doesn’t help! 😊

4 years agoPainting and re-tiling is probably your best bet! But if you want a real fire and less fuss, bioethanol fires are a great alternative! Happy to answer any questions you may have!
