Ceiling Speakers

Hello,

We're currently renovating our property and have decided to have a wifi ceiling speaker system preferably only downstairs; hall, lounge, kitchen, dining. My husband and i are dreaming of having xmas music playing at the same time throughout the house in December via a device (phone, tablet etc). our property is a modern property.

Is there a speaker system anyone would recommend ? How many speakers would we need in each room?

I have attached the floorplan of our property aswell as the room dimensions below....

Lounge - 17'2" x 11'6" (5.23m x 3.51m)

Dining Room - 10'9" x 10'7" (3.28m x 3.23m)

Hallway - 5.15m x 1.85mm

Kitchen 16'1" x 10'4" (4.90m x 3.15m)

I have my speakers in my kitchen plinths. My music is on Spotify on my iPad and I have a Remo that I switch on in conjunction with Spotify and it belts it out through the speakers. Love it. No clutter.

Hi Gav, I haven't come across any customers who have installed in-wall or in-ceiling speakers but I have had some who have gone for something like this: https://www.lightmirrors.co.uk They pair with your mobile using Bluetooth and supposedly sound very good but but I have not heard them for myself. I they are a worth looking into though.

Whenever we read anything about people planning we always start our mantra of "cable for everything" - for the simple reason cable costs very little and then allows the home owner or interior designer to achieve so much... But what would this mean in real-world application for you? No wires on show - great!, but how about blinds/curtains that are easily controlled or even close open dependant on light levels? Add to this a lighting controller and the home really does start to feel very modern as you move about and use your wonderful living-spaces (and don't forget a few circuits for the exterior areas and front door). Music around the home is also very easy and affordable - we'd suggest cabling for some discrete ceiling speakers, and no modern home is complete without some form of home cinema. Design is king at this stage so build a great relationship with your Architect and Interior Designer. We look forward to seeing some plans, photos & your ideas :)

Hi Tony. I think having the tv at an angle and building the cupboard out a little is probably the best option if you didn’t want to downsize the tv. Regarding speakers, ceiling speakers are a good idea if you’re in the construction phase, they usually come in pairs (left and right) and four would be more than adequate for a large room. You would need the ceiling speaker hoods as well for fire and sound protection. Also the necessary wiring would need to be hidden and all speaker wires go to an AV receiver which then connects to tv ( I think...not really an expert on this). Have a look at Richer sounds website, they should have lots of info: https://www.richersounds.com/hi-fi/in-wall-ceiling-speakers.html @ Jonathan, I can feel my hubby’s horrified look if he heard you say that TVs alone have adequate speakers ;-) (he is a perfectionist when it comes to tech stuff mind). We prefer freestanding speakers so we can upgrade as and when. And finally is the fireplace already existing? If not (at the risk of offending other Houzzers:)) maybe consider tv set into chimney breast above a low ribbon style fire, perhaps bio ethanol fuel as these wouldn’t need a flue. Tv above fire is usually a big no no as the tv is too high up and would cause neck strain but the modern styles could work well. Some photos for inspiration (click to enlarge)

Sonos is first choice.. Also consider sound proofing plasterboards and good insulation to reduce sound and vibration

I have done that in my existing house and whilst it reduces the sound movement to the upstairs, it does eliminate it.

Has anyone used the in wall speakers that one plasters over?

I have not done any projects incorporating any of these. I sadly would not be of any help for that, hope you get your answers!

Sonos / IKEA has just announced some picture frame speakers might be worth a look
