Its okay to get it wrong. You can always send them back. Most retailers are more than happy to accept returns. Rugs can look totally different to how they are pictured online.

The last time I had to pick one for my house I bought all the ones I liked. In the end I kept the one I least liked when I saw it online!

Hi, lovely room! I think that something like this would complement your furniture and wall colour and brighten up the room too. We have ordered a rug from Rugvista last year, because we needed a large size and didn't want to spend loads of money on it and I have to say that it didn't disappoint. Looked exactly as it did on the website and got delivered quickly. It's very soft and looks pretty luxurious. (Promise I don't work for them). I think they don't have loads of the same rug in stock, since you often see a sold sign on their site, so you'd have to check in regularly.

This one looks good too. Different company. What I like about ours is that it has a fringe on two sides and the bound edge doesn't look too cheap (some do). But there we are. You can get them with the edges folded back and bound (Louis de Poortere do lovely rugs too), but they'll cost more.

I love those faded look rugs mimicking ancient oriental rugs. As Carolina suggests you could pick a rug with has the lovely soft shades of your decor in it. Or you can go with a completely plain grey/taupe rug and then place a big comfy footstool or coffee table in the middle of it.

Forgot to say buy the biggest you can afford. Rugs look better with sofa legs sitting on them, rather than floating in the middle of the room. This will make the room lovely and cosy. 😊. Like this

I wonder if it would be an idea to move both your sofas all the way inwards onto the rug, close together, so creating a comfortable, sociable ‘zone’. Possibly with your footstool (currently in the bay) at the centre as your coffee table.

With the extra space created you would then be able to walk behind the sofa(s) and/or use it for plants/ console table, floor lamp etc.

I feel this might give you a room that both feels spacious AND cozy.

It also means you don’t have to up-size the rug. Maybe even stick to the one you have.

Hi ED, thanks for your comment. I do love that style of layout you have suggested and we have thought about it but as we watch TV in this room I’m not sure how it will work. As you will appreciate- our favourite saying in here is - ‘old house , cold house ‘ ( particularly Scottish winters 🥶). The wood burner does however make it toasty in the winter. I will try your suggestions out and see how it looks. Thanks again x

I would think you could still watch TV normally with that layout.

I would still move the footstool to a spot in front of one of the sofas. Apart from somewhere to rest tired legs, it would also double up as a coffee table. I love a footstool!

Hi Sonia, you’re spot on . The footstool is in front of the big sofa, I just moved it for the photos. I do however prefer the look of the taller one you’ve shown here.

I prefer your footstool Eileen. We’ve got a similar storage one in leather on order at the moment. I chose leather because we just couldn’t decide on a colour!
