Velux Window Size
Hi All
Looking for some advice, sent my proposed plans for rear extension to Velux to check size of roof windows required. Was a little worried that the existing room in the house would be a little dark if the windows were too small, the extension is 4m and the current rooms are slightly longer it’s around an 8m internal space. They proposed PK10 94cmx160cm, these are shown on plans below, they have taken into account the bifolds size and side window. Would these look too big? The extension is east facing.

6 years agoYou need to sketch out your options to see what looks best for you, that's what we done. And you need to tell the builders exactly what you want, eg middle gap in line with centre of middle door etc.

How wide are the doors? I wouldn't have windows ending nearer the walls than the doors.
If I had 3 velux, I'd want the middle in line with centre of my doors. Is it bifolds, slider, 2 or 3 pane or windows and doors?
I'd want my velux equal spaced.
Do you have any tall furniture down any walls under sloped roof? If so, I wouldn't have velux above tall furniture.
You need to make accurate sketches to see what you like.
I think 3 is a bit much, I went for 2.

Comments (6)Hi Sarah, I would DEFINITELY go with electric. Re the comment above about energy use, unless your spending the entire day operating them then the energy use is zero and nominal. They come with (as you're probably aware) with a great remote, very easy to use. The sensor on them is also amazing in that if it starts to rain they close automatically. I've just moved to a property with 5 sky lights. They're all manual and its a total pain!! I don't get why you'd employ blinds during the day - isn't there anything better than natural light inside? Being north facing your not going to cook and besides on a sunny day through the doors open and feel like your cooking in the garden. I'd probably opt to have 2 large velux only along one side - which ever is hit by the sunlight and skip the light above the door - that's a saving which you could spend on higher spec. If there's an island or dining table, is there a velux above? If so, you need to think about hoe your lights will work. If hob on island, extractor? Id have 2 long horizontal velux. Thanks one plan so it would seem that the size of the Velux are ok but they need to be positioned in line with the bifolds, moving the outer ones in slightly. We left a space internally at either side of the bifolds for wall rads.
