Definitely version 1

version 2. the flow is much better and more open

I'm only imagining I'm sitting on a stool, version 1 I'd be looking at a wall with views behind me which to me isn't ideal.

Option 2 presumably looks out onto garden

Summary, stools as in version 2, don't know what the other door is though

I think version 2 gives a much more generous feeling space as there is less hallway. I like the utility straight into the garden though from plan 1.

Version 2 because

- you can walk straight into the kitchen from the hall rather than going the long way round past the dining table

- you get an extra room (room 2)!

- the kitchen/diner is bigger

- kitchen layout is better (in version 1 the sink and hob are miles apart which is not practical)

- bar stools look out towards garden (though bar stool direction could presumably be swapped in version 1)

thanks for the feedback. One thing that does worry me is the number of doors. I am really struggling, my partner is now talking about sticking a door on version 1 into the room on the left (utility room). i worry about this. We could extend further out by a meter or so. Do you think space is big enough? I'm really struggling to visualise it, despite using IKEA design tool. I would like some comfy seating somewhere, so it isnt just functional for eating and cooking.

How do you get to grips with what the space will actually look like?

sorry in the above post I meant my partner wants to add a door onto versiob 2 into the room on the left simialr to the door on version 1. This leaves me with no corners.

Where do the doors at bottom middle version 2 lead to or where does hallway in version 1 continue on to?

If it goes onto living room/bedrooms I wouldn't want to have to go through kitchen to get there

Version 2 is better by default because Version 1 does not work -- you have an island between the sink and the range. Version 2 has the fridge in a slightly inconvenient place, but you might be able to live with that. Putting a door in the corner would make version 2 impractical as you lose quite a lot of workspace. The range would have to shift down a bit (as we look at it), which puts it in line with the island. I would think about getting rid of the island and having a peninsula, or galley, if you want a door in the top left.

@EllieEllie That room (room 1) on the right next to a hall/shower is a bedroom.

perhaps the hallway in Version needs to come right through to the right side of the house and that becomes the access to room 1. Then you avoid going through the kitchen.

I prefer Version 1 - mainly because a utility room (and the side entrance from outside) would be so useful. As others have said, you can't have the sink so far from the cooker with the island in between - so the kitchen layout needs some work, but I'd definitely do V1. I'd make the utility bigger though - do what your husband wants, make the V2 bedroom into a big utility with access from outside and into the kitchen - making it bigger gives you more options on where to put the door thru into the kitchen too, to save walking into the side of a cabinet. I'd probably keep the little corridor in front of the shower room, so that you could also enter the utility from the hallway - and therefore you can get into kitchen that way from hallway or walking thru dining room. the utility should then be big enough for laundry and boot room combined - and with the shower room beside it, all very useful when you come in either door.

@CWD Thanks. Room 1 has to stay as a bedroom, I was referring to my partner wanting to put a put a door going from the kitchen into room 2 (on version 2).

Here is another design, one I rejected as I felt there was too much hallway. Now Im wondering if this hallway into the bedrooms works better (room 1 and the room next to bathroom 2 are both bedrooms)

Sorry if this has been asked already, but what do you need? Do you need two bedrooms or one? Do you need two bathrooms, or one? What other space have you got?

We have two bedrooms upstairs and soon a small shower/toilet as well. It's a chalet bungalow.

We did want to add bedrooms upstairs but the cost was over 100k due to the changing height of our roof, so it would all of had to come off to achieve this. It would have been pointless as I may as well have moved.

So the downstairs room 1 has been extended for my eldest child (soon to be teen) and the other downstairs room is a guest bedroom. The second bedroom upstairs is for my 5 year old

Downstairs we have two lounges at the front of the house, which I like. I dont like completely open plan as I enjoy being away So the new space is to extend the kitchen and provide a eatting area and I hope a comfy area to enjoy the garden view. We have no houses behind us, so the view is fields

@Ellie you made a really good point about not walking through a kitchen, so I think I'm going to go with the Version 3 plan (with some tweaks), it ralso removes doors and allows a clean wall space.
