I suppose it depends what you want. If you're trying to cosy the space up by adding pictures/clocks etc then here's what I'd do, for what it's worth: Get a unit similar in height and style to the TV console and run it against that wall. Don't clutter it, though; just a few books and perhaps a sculptural vase/ornament. Above it in the space where the clock is put three very small frames with simple pictures/splashes of colour that pick out your main colour ways in the room. How busy you make them depends on your blinds and other artwork and patterns; could even be a fun project to do with kids, if any. Add a rug, even if it's only sisal. It'll warm up the space and make it look finished. Of course, this is assuming that you're not deliberately pursuing a cool minimalist look in which case ignore everything and keep everything as it is, minus clock OR picture.

We had a similar hideous fireplace in our Victorian flat. We bit the bullet and ripped it out ourself, it turned out to be a reproduction and I suspect yours is too! It was easy to take it out. I then bought a smaller, more appropriate fireplace on gumtree for £100 and attached it using grippafill and two brackets at the side onto the wall. We had to pay a plasterer about £80 but it was amazing the difference it made!

Are the hands fixed or do they move? If they are easily removed it should be fairly easy. You can buy battery powered quartz clock mechanisms in craft shops or eBay. Go for one with a high torque motor and get a set of hands to fit the motor. You may be able to modify the existing ones to fit, but it probably won't be easy and if they are too heavy or too thick would not work with the battery mechanism. If the existing hands are fixed ( welded on) it's more work, not impossible but probably easier to buy a different clock
