rug colour help please

Hello!

I am thinking about rugs for the living room and then one for under the dining table. Am getting myself very confused with what colours to use, to go light or dark? The rug for the living room is going to cover most of the floor, from under the sofas to under the front legs of the chairs, so it will be almost carpet like with a floor border round the edge. The art over the sofa is going to be remounted and framed (currently thinking dark grey mount and a distressed/aged silver frame). The living area is open plan with the kitchen/diner and I also want a rug to go under the table in here but I don’t think they need to match.
My current issue for the living room is do I go light or dark? I don’t feel like I can go dark grey because of the kitchen, the sofa is slightly blue/grey so any creams don’t sit well with it. Have attached some of the ones I’ve looked at but any inspo/thoughts appreciated - I’m not massively into bright colours (as you can probably tell)

I don’t think you need a rug under the dining table. You have that beautiful floor so why cover it up? I really like the first one for your sitting area. It has a faded Persian rug look which I love and is very fashionable at the moment. i also like the petroleum blue and dark blue one. I do love colourful rugs and have a red Persian one in my living room, but I know it’s not for everyone!

I had a similar situation in a house I moved into years ago. I did a quick fix of painting all of the walls, woodword and the cupboards the same shade of cream. Sounds a bit OTT but it really knocked back the cupboards, which in all honesty are not something you want to make a feature out of, and created a calmness to the whole space. In your case, I would go for an off white so that the gang plug wires, radiator pipes and covers hiding the wires for the extractor fan etc., are disguised as much as possible -- that will tie in with the palest of the tiles in the splash back, and then you will have a pretty basic colour scheme of a very place colour and the dark worktop, fireplace and floor, which will stand out more. I think you need more storage with doors -- that bookshelf isn't doing anything for the kitchen. If you could get something in there that could hide lots of clutter -- even if just something cheap from IKEA, that would help greatly. Or work something around the filing cabinet that you have? A huge cheap mirror over the fireplace would bounce some light around too. If you don't want to go for undercupboard lighting, and if you have enough plug points, how about some lamps on the worktop, especially at the FF end with a floor standing lamp at the end with the chair. For the table, I would go for a table cloth and reupholster the chairs if they are not to your taste. A new blind in a much fresher colour would be great. Depending on the colour of your filing cabinet (if you use it), I think a petrol blue could add a nice vintage vibe to the chimney breast, and make more of a feature of it. I would try and go down a vintage/slightly industrial route rather than country. You may have some stuff lurking around that you could use, once you have got the base colours right -- currently it just feels a little cluttered and a bit of a mish mash. Best of luck. Greg think you have made a great start, just needs a few colourful statement pieces. Firstly the chest of drawers are fab, my suggestion if you like them would be to utilise them in the lounge either side of the radiator under the window, for storing what looks like cd's the other side of the fireplace in these. You could put the existing cubes either side of the two sofa's. I would ditch the rug in the lounge, and get something bold and bright such as cobalt blue with orange/yellow. In the bedroom, keep the IKEA drawers and paint them either black or dark blue and have them adjacent to each other on the back wall opposite the bed, with the TV on top as someone has already suggested. The art work is great, but would swap it over to where the mirror is and move that elsewhere. Again ditch the rug, maybe an animal skin would work well in here, keeping a masculine feel. Pick some of the colours from the artwork for a well chosen throw and cushions for the bed, and don't be afraid to use some other accessories such as vases, lamps and dare I say candles!

Hi Loula, I would probably start with a geometric rug in grey and white. A shape mirroring that of the chair detailing. This will also still be crisp and contemporary like the rest of the space. Cushions in white will help tie the colours throughout the space rather than just having blocks of it. A large piece of art of work in the same colours on the wall behind the dining table would really work.. maybe a peaceful seascape to add a bit of tranquillity to an area for relaxing. Finish with a few accessories on the table and beside the TV to help bridge the gaps. Grey is a great contemporary colour that will work well with the scheme you have started. You now just need a few more layers to really bring it to life. At the end, as Liz suggested, you could add a single punch of a great colour to add a little warmth - my suggestions would be burnt orange or a deep rich purple. irugs.co.uk have a massive selection. Lots in the sale (which is a bit DFS neverending but anyway ...). I bought one in their sale 11"*6" for £70. Shipped from the US and no extra import costs either. Lots of geometrics in their 'modern' area.

Gorgeous house. I personally wouldn’t go dark as much as I like the petrol coloured one.

just another option, is this west elm one, it’s wool and quite textured close up but couldn’t get an image.

I wouldn’t put a rug under the table either, they look nice but can be impractical and as Sonia said you’d be covering your gorgeous floor. If you want to zone it why not add a pendant? If it doesn’t work with the joists then you could swag one

I was thinking of one under the dining table to kind of zone it and the chairs are scratching the floor pretty badly 😕 here’s my experiment with the outdoor rug 😁

The rug does look very nice however personally having had one under a table I wouldn’t again but it’s obviously up to you 😊 you could try protectors on the chair legs too? A pendant would also zone but don’t let me put you off!

I love the bamboo rug, I couldn’t get a photo of it on its own but thinking too similar in tone? They only seem to do a charcoal and warm grey too unfortunately?

Very nice room! I agree with Minnie and would go for a lighter rug. What do you think of these from La Redoute? Alternatively, you could stick special felt thingies (technical term) under the feet of the dining chairs to prevent them scratching the floor.

Forgot to say that I'd probably not go as large as you're planning. Think it'll be fine if the front feet of the sofa are comfortably on the rug, but the chairs aren't.

Thank you guys, maybe the dining area is future me problems 😁 unfortunately we have a sprinkler system in the ceiling very close to the table which means any pendant lights need to be placed a certain distance away from it and won’t be centre on the table. We’ve also tried the felty things on the chairs but our underfloor heating keeps the glue soft and they just fall off when the chair is moved.

For the living room o was kind of thinking this sort of size, not sure if it’s too big?

Ah, no... that's a good size! For some reason I thought it would be too close to the walls, but that seems fine to me :-)

I have a rug under the dining table and love it. Nice and soft underfoot. You need to check if a rug doesn't affect the underfloor heating. The back needs to be hessian (or at least not foam) and the rug can't be too thick.

What a lovely room. I think a pale grey rug or rugs would look nice and it would help keep the space light and open
