Renovating Design Dilemma Bathrooms

Small Loft Ensuite Layout Help :)

The builders arrive in January to start our loft. The ensuite is roughly 2200 x 1700, hoping for a large walk in shower, plus loo, basin and towel rail. I have attached the current plans rom the architect, but I've been wondering if switching things around might give us more space. The sink needs to have a mirrored cabinet above it so can't go in front of the window.

Opening the door to see the basin and mirror is much nicer than opening to see a wc ... this looks a sensible design to me too.

The layout looks sensible to me but I am no expert. My only suggestion would be to move or add a light so that I wasn’t in shadow when using the mirror. I think a light above the sink or some wall lights next to it would be useful. In a perfect world I’d want my rowel rail closer to the sink and bath too but I’m not sure how you could achieve that unless you built some sort of partition wall between the bath and sink to hang it on.

Yes but I think we decided to try and fit the vanity on the small taller wall where the side door will be. It seemed odd not having a mirror above the sink but then we have a big empty wall opposite the short one that we could have a mirror and a shelf for doing hair etc so I'm debating what to do now, haha

Just thought I would update my post as the en suite is *almost finished. Only take 6 months (rolls eyes) and still a bit of cladding above the WC to finish and on the sink unit (same walnut cladding on the front) and of course I have to have a shower screen designed as it won’t take a standard shower door. Such fun. Will take some other angle pics over the weekend once it’s all tidied up and cleaned. Just struggling now with storage!! Only got a shallow space under the sink (25cm deep- 26cm at most) to put some drawers but I can’t find any. Got space on the wc side for a little bench seat with storage under so trying to work out the best colour/style that’s not too twee.

First of all it is worth thinking about what you need to store, whether you need room for two at a time getting changed or using the sink and more lifestyle thoughts. We've just completed our loft bathroom. We have our bathroom in the slope and its 2200 by 1800. We're very surprised at how much space we have especially with the slope and it being an ensuite, so I'd say yours is fine.

I had one other thought. There’s no rule that a bathroom radiator has to be a towel rail. If you had a radiator under the window would you have space for a tall, slim cabinet? IKEA do a really good one that can have a full length mirror on the front of it. Actually I’m not sure they still do the one I was thinking of but they do have this...

Yes our door swings out into the bedroom due to the slope but it means we have more room in the ensuite

The layout is great. I have a similar one, same room dimensions. I have a sliding door to my ensuite. Centering the sink to the door is very pleasing. Make sure to center the tiles too, both wall and floor.
Get a mirror with LED light built in; it’s a great addition. Also a storage vanity under the sink. Measure the depth of the sink/vanity and the depth of the mirror cabinet and make sure that there is enough clearance for you to bend to wash your face. You might need a deeper vanity/sink because of the hanging cabinet.
Don’t forget to add a built-in shelf (niche) inside the shower when framing it (for shampoo etc). Make it bigger and taller than you think. Mine is 40x40cm. I also added a shaving shelf, for legs.

I have drawn 2 designs over each other (!) Not sure if you would like a bath? or a double basin?

If using bath design, then use shower screen that is hinged, or even double hinged on wall too. Bath can get wet, too, like on photo below. Bath can be 1.4x.7.

You get beautiful heat poles (looks very modern and not too pricey) from vogueuk.co.uk. (No, I don't work for them :-), which you could place on left of basin(s), ready for getting out of shower. (Heater under window if no UFHeating.) Or with a 1.7m shower, you can have towel heater on far wall opposite shower head, and towels will most likely stay dry.

If 2 basins too old fashioned, then long, narrow trough basin with double spouts?

Or one basin and a plant in the corner?

A pocket door or door opening into bedroom will hugely help.

The reason for the toilet and basin next to each other is to accommodate the soil pipe. Maybe there is a different way. Not sure of the rest of the layout.

The most spacious feel will be with just a shower and a narrow double basin. Will look awesome! Enjoy your journey - you know your needs and preferences!

Our loft en suite is near identical to your plans - however we decided to have our door hung the other way so it opens out into the bedroom. It makes the en suite seem much bigger. Also our toilet is turned 90 degrees and sits under the window - this again makes the room seem a bit bigger. We have a normal close coupled toilet. If I was to do it again, I’d have it in the same place but I would get the cistern built into the stud wall to save even more space!
