Pantry Project 2021

last modified: 5 years ago

When we purchased our home in 2019, there were a number of things on the "must do" list and a few more on the "maybe in a few years" list. Then there was the pantry. The pantry is tucked in under the stairwell and one must step out of the kitchen into the hall to access it. The previous owner's installed a barn door (my guess is to address the problem of opening a door into a hall walkway) and, while it is not really my style, I have learned to live with it.

But then I ran across a pantry much like mine on Instagram and was totally inspired! The designer had created a really nice space out of what is really kind of an odd space. I'm debating between doing a DIY mini-refresh with paint and new lighting OR going all in with custom shelving and tile. So far, I have purchased some paint samples and ordered the same light fixture after contacting the designer for source. Here is the inspiration photo:

And here is my sad little pantry:

Having tile installed and custom shelving made would be lovely but I'm not sure I wouldn't be satisfied with a refresh using paint and existing wire shelving. The door is always closed and we are the only ones to see it - but dang, that inspiration pantry sparks joy!

I'm interested in your thoughts. Also, if just paint and light fixture, what color do you think? I'm leaning toward a green but a blue would also work. So would any greige color.

ETA: Pantry size is 35" wide x 65" long. The ceiling slopes along the 5.5" length from 7.5' to 3'.
