Fireplaces Living Rooms Design Dilemma

Fireplace advice please

I'm a first time buyer redecorating our 1930's, small living room (repainted in navy). We've kept the majority of the fire place but have removed the surround as it was way too big for a small room. How would you finish off the fire place? NB gas is turned off on the fire.

I would put the surround back and paint it white. It will create a lovely contrast to the navy walls and give you a focal point to the room.

Of course. The dimensions would depend on the size of the fireplace/burner you would be going for. The opening would have to be made of non-flammable material, such as brick, stone, metal, porcelain tiles, Vermiculite Board, etc. You could use non-flammable paint over that. For example, our freestanding baskets like the one Richard posted above need 60 cm clearance from the bottom to the top; or if you wanted a contemporary line of fire look you could go for our Regulating Bio Containers like the one in the photo below - all required dimensions are available in the brochure with building advice on our website. Hi everyone! Just posting an update to show how it’s all progressing. Thank you all very much for your suggestions and advice! In the end, we opted to take the easiest possible approach. We re-used the old MDF covering as a backing board cut out a hole for so that the fireplace is visible, and tiled it out. We then made a “surround” for the “hole” (because the tiles wouldn’t fit and we didn’t fancy cutting any more than we necessary) and stuck it on over the MDF. I then painted the “feet” to get rid of the sludgy grey colour. I’m happy with the results! Certainly not practical or usable as a heat source in any shape or form, but I think it’s nice to look at, at the very least! Next step is to find something for the hearth, not quite sure what to do just yet!

As others have noted, it is absolutely stunning! So i am firmly in the no paint camp....I think I read a suggestion to see if you can lighten the feel by first changing the wall color in the side cupboards and see if changing the glass to plate glass - so agree! You could always take this as a first step and see how this changes things before going the full paintout path.

I think this is faithful to the period of the house- of course you never know if something is original. The hearth looks new. The hood is missing and if replaced would make it more faithful. Grate polish would give you a better finish on the black cast iron than paint. The “marble” is likely original as the Victorians loved a painted faux finish to make things look more opulent. Personally I would try to gently clean it and restore it. Research Linseed oil to decide if this might be the right product for your paintwork.

Thanks for your thoughts everyone :) A white surround was one of my ideas so I'm glad to see it mentioned here! The old surround was damaged beyond repair and not looked after so we have recycled it. What would you do with the actual fire? The gas is switched off so debating to make the space hollow. We aren't fussed about having a working fire

Hi Lucy, the actual fire looks quite realistic so I would leave it, but of course it’s up to you. Surrounds can be bought online, at reclamation yards or even places like B&Q where I bought mine. Here’s some examples and the one from Etsy is a bit of a bargain! The other 2 are from B&Q.
