Fireplace advice please

last month

I'm a first time buyer redecorating our 1930's, small living room (repainted in navy). We've kept the majority of the fire place but have removed the surround as it was way too big for a small room. How would you finish off the fire place? NB gas is turned off on the fire.

I would put the surround back and paint it white. It will create a lovely contrast to the navy walls and give you a focal point to the room.

Of course. The dimensions would depend on the size of the fireplace/burner you would be going for. The opening would have to be made of non-flammable material, such as brick, stone, metal, porcelain tiles, Vermiculite Board, etc. You could use non-flammable paint over that. For example, our freestanding baskets like the one Richard posted above need 60 cm clearance from the bottom to the top; or if you wanted a contemporary line of fire look you could go for our Regulating Bio Containers like the one in the photo below - all required dimensions are available in the brochure with building advice on our website. In my opinion it depends on budget. The best option is to take off the wood cladding and coving and then get a plasterer in. The budget option is to sugar soap these walls to ensure there is no wallpaper paste residue, then fill and sand any cracks and also use decorators calk to fill cracks in corners and next to woodwork. Then you need to mist coat the walls which is basically a watered down coat of paint. When that is dry it will need two rollered coats of emulsion (3 if it’s a strong colour). A very flat Matt paint shows imperfections least. After the first coat of paint check it for any bits that might need more filling. In conclusion the key to a nice finish on the walls is lots of preparation and then a low/ no sheen paint.

To follow on from some useful posts here: BTU calculation is absolutely your starting point. Better to oversize the rad rather than undersize, especially if you are using a modern condensing boiler that runs at lower temps for greater efficiency. So make sure that the BTU output quoted for the rad is at the temp you will have the boiler set to. A Pro like FR above can give you this info. We used Revive Radiators' steel column rads throughout the house. Being steel, as opposed to cast, they can be tall, and come in a 1500 size, 1200 size as well as the standard 1800mm. We actually have them in 2000 in the pic below. Ordered from mrcentralheating.co.uk who are helpful and reliable (i've used them in all three of my renovations). The rads have been fitted in my flat for over 10 years now and perform perfectly, so they have been tested. I'd definitely go with one tall rad, as it will free up floor/wall space for other stuff, like a feature chair or table, plants on the floor during the summer etc. Not a great pic, but you can see a 2metre tall, 3 column variant in lacquered raw steel finish on the wall of our new house next to the living room door. Behind, in the hallway, is a white, horizontal variant. The ugly plastic device on the valves are Honeywell's Evohome TRV controllers, which I cannot recommend highly enough (apart from the plasticky design), for temp control for each room individually.

Hi everyone! Just posting an update to show how it’s all progressing. Thank you all very much for your suggestions and advice! In the end, we opted to take the easiest possible approach. We re-used the old MDF covering as a backing board cut out a hole for so that the fireplace is visible, and tiled it out. We then made a “surround” for the “hole” (because the tiles wouldn’t fit and we didn’t fancy cutting any more than we necessary) and stuck it on over the MDF. I then painted the “feet” to get rid of the sludgy grey colour. I’m happy with the results! Certainly not practical or usable as a heat source in any shape or form, but I think it’s nice to look at, at the very least! Next step is to find something for the hearth, not quite sure what to do just yet!

Thanks for your thoughts everyone :) A white surround was one of my ideas so I'm glad to see it mentioned here! The old surround was damaged beyond repair and not looked after so we have recycled it. What would you do with the actual fire? The gas is switched off so debating to make the space hollow. We aren't fussed about having a working fire

Hi Lucy, the actual fire looks quite realistic so I would leave it, but of course it’s up to you. Surrounds can be bought online, at reclamation yards or even places like B&Q where I bought mine. Here’s some examples and the one from Etsy is a bit of a bargain! The other 2 are from B&Q.
