Garden wall help

Our garden wall was once painted white by the previous owners many moons ago and looks a bit of a mess now especially with my sporadic red bricks I’ve painted.

The wall is NNW facing so the guttering at the top was an idea to plant flowers that didn’t quite work.

Does anyone have any suggestions to spruce it up?

I love old brick walls, they add so much charm to a garden. It’s crying out for a white or yellow climbing rose, assuming the wall gets lots of sun? The guttering would only be good for raising seedlings. It isn’t deep enough to grow much more. You could then plant some hardy Geraniums in front of it. Geranium Rozanne is particularly pretty and flowers all summer long.

I'd dig out a border and plant climbers, next doors looks fab! Or just get another 5 pots like the one you have?

If you have a few bricks lying around I would test it first, mine had a bit more texture than yours so it was easy to get a dappled brick effect with the different colours. The other thing is, it may age when you have plants over it. Or you could try the live yoghurt trick or tea or coffee staining may work! I think you should probably have a practice run anyway! I don't think the wall is that bad anyway and once you add the plants you'll hardly see any of it. Can you also add potted plants? You could also try adding metal wires all the way across the wall and training plants all the way across. We did that with our old back fence as it didn't belong to us and wasn't particularly attractive.

Okay being a sunny spot means you can grow a lot more. Vigorous climbers that are beautiful are Clematis Montana (my previous first pic) and Rambler Roses, Honeysuckle, Jasmine (Jasminum officinale) and Pyracantha. Climbing Roses and other forms of Clematis are less vigorous but great fillers. All will need tying in and training but no real hardship. You can read up about sun loving climbers on the RHS website. Many of these plants have gorgeous scents as well, especially the Honeysuckle and Jasmine. Wisteria is a stunning winding plant that needs to be thoroughly tied in, but it is gorgeous. I like the dark blue. I have a similar/perhaps the same colour on part of my fence to compliment the grey. It’s Cuprinol Garden Shades Iris. My neighbour has the pale blue painted on his son‘s play house and it’s vile. On the next road to me a fence has also been painted in the pale blue and that looks wishy washy too. In the Cuprinol range there are lots of colour choices and it’s fabulous stuff and so easy to put on. Perhaps look at the green colours?

It’s north north west facing so doesn’t get much sun at all. Although enough for the ivy as shown on the neighbours as Ellie pointed out. I like your idea Sonia but just not sure they will grow due to the lack of sun. I’m thinking maybe some reclaimed pallets or something but I’m really not sure what. The bottom of the wall gets really saturated after rain fall so a planter of some sort might be a good idea. Hmm what to do...

Some roses cope well in shade and if you go to the RHS website or Austin Roses website they will list them. Another climber than enjoys shade is Climbing Hydrangea. It creeps up a wall rather like ivy but not so invasive. Then you can underplant with ferns, Bergenias and hosts which all love shade. I can also see a gothic outdoor mirror on that wall too. These plants will all enjoy the shade and damp.
