Replace single panel/compact radiators with column, advice?

As a home improvement noob I hope I can get some advice from all you lovely people before I approach plumbers.

I'm looking at replacing all the radiators in the house which are a combination of 'compact' and the old flat 'single panel?' radiators to the column radiators which are much more my taste aesthetically. I do have a very limited budget so would really appreciate any advice.

So excluding the cost of the radiator itself...

1) How much should a plumber be charging to do a straight forward swap of the radiators?

2) Would it cost a lot more if I got smaller radiators? as the pipes would have to be connected in a different place?

3) Would it cost a lot more if I wanted to move the radiators to a different wall?

4) I'm looking to get my existing floorboards replaced so am I right in thinking it makes more sense for the radiators to be done first before the floor being redone?

5) For column radiators I've seen 2/3/4 column options, is there much of a difference other than the aesthetic, between these options? Does the amount of heat being released differ at all?

Sorry if these are silly questions but like I said, I'm completely clueless!

Oh I'm based on the outskirts of York if that also helps.

Hi Louise,

1 - Most charge a daily rate. Anything from £100 to £250 per day. Really depends on a lot of factors like experience, location etc.

2 - smaller radiators may be cheaper to buy but the extra work of moving pipes could put the price over that of larger ones that don't need pipes adjusting.

3 - Yes it will cost more to relocate the radiators. The more work for the plumber the more he'll charge. Plus the cost of new pipes.

4 - Yes it makes much more sense to get radiators done while floorboards are up. Less work for the plumber the less he'll charge.

5 - Radiator heat output is measured in BTUs(British Thermal Units). Generally the more water a radiator can hold the greater it's heat output. Bigger/thicker radiators hold more water so output more heat. There are many online BTU calculators that can help you figure out what size of radiator is best for each room in your house. An experienced plumber will also be able to help when choosing the right size radiator.

I feel like I'm making loads of decision but still not really getting anywhere. There is so much to think about! Spotted some lovely toggle light switches so I've already bought them. I know where the light switches are going but its a case of figuring out the best places to put the plug sockets because we have so many in my mums house but we still run out! We've opted for a few USB sockets too so at least if we are charging phones and laptops, we are freeing space for other things too. In terms of kitchen layout, the suggestion of the seating in the bay window is great but because that would mean the kitchen would have to go at the other end, we've decided against this. It would work, and would probably be the best option once the horrible extension is knocked down but at the moment, the extension blocks all the sun light on that side so the kitchen would be very dim and dark for a while. The extension is something we are saving for and is more likely to be done in 4-5 years time so I'm not sure it makes sense to be in a dark corner for that length of time. We've had the house a month tomorrow and so far it has been ripping the house apart. January is the month we put everything back! Super excited. Plumber, heating engineer and builders are all put to the task in January. New floor in the kitchen, wall removed and built up again to accommodate the new window so that we can have units underneath, first fix plumbing, first fix heating and boiler installation. All other windows to be installed. Hoping that guttering and chimneys can be looked at too! We have a chimney breast on almost every wall which I'm sure was great for heating years ago but as they are no longer used, they cause so many damp issues! I bought paint tester pots today - I have no idea why, we are nowhere near ready for that but it just felt nice to buy something pretty and cosmetic rather than look at insulation and damp proofing. P.S; any suggestions on obscure glass for the bathroom and hallway? I've been given a huge list of options but unsure as to what to choose. Thinking just Contora or Arctic?

I agree with the comments about covering whatever you have with a radiator cover - to reduce ugliness and provide a really useful shelf above. However, whether you go down that route or not, the location is a super-important aspect. Mine is in exactly the wrong place - and it was my decision - and I regret it every day. The trouble is that it took a lot of drilling through concrete below original terracotta tiles (I had no idea it would mean that) so if I move it again it means more wrecked floor and how the pipes would work is impossible to imagine. I can't cover it up with a cover as it is in a small corner next to the front door and fits the space exactly, end to end. A cover would stop the door from opening. I had hopeless advice from the plumber installing the radiator; advice I have to live with - bitterly. Mine is in a hall like yours with the radiator opposite yours but facing the hall (my window is half length). I didn't want it where yours is as I thought it would protrude just where people arrive or leave. I reckon yours is in the right place; it just needs to be prettied up a bit.

No big TV! I know what my OH would say to that He couldn’t wait to get the big ass latest 4K tv. It would be a shame to lose the fireplace as it is a nice feature ( I’ve got nothing against traditional features) but if you have a nice one elsewhere in the house and this room is primarily for tv viewing then I’d be tempted to lose it. If you leave a small opening of the fire place you could do like Resh said and have a small gel burner, candles or some logs with fairy lights. Or maybe stash the AV equipment in there and cover with fire screen in front, back lit with orange Led lights so it kind of looks like a fire but isn’t. Dark colour walls sound fab, my only problem is I think the radiator will stick out like a sore thumb, so either paint it same colour as the walls, cover it, or maybe replace with one of them fancy Victorian style column radiators.

The doors are plain so no need to replace. Wallpaper by definition will command attention as soon as you enter the room, so unless you are a skilled wallpaper fitter to perfectly cover the doors etc then it can look shabby and will be short lived. Prepare the doors well, paint with a good quality eggshell (either the same as the walls or a colour two shades darker) and fit new handles. A tidy, clean, updated and economical result!
