Suggestions for stairs pls

We have 1970's open stairs and I've just ripped off all the old carpet to reveal this. We will be stripping them back to bare wood whatever we decide to do long-term but I was wondering whether we 1. keep it as bare wood 2. paint it all white 3. re carpet the treads only 4. something else?
Background info: the stairs themselves have lots of holes and old nails that have been hammered in which I've unsuccessfully tried to get out. We also have 6 year old twins running about the house! Thanks for your thoughts

Wow great example of 70s design.

If the rest of the entrance has a light colour palette then I would say restore it back to wood and and make the staircase a feature.

If that's not possible due to the cost of repairing the damage and you are going to paint them then I would say just cover the treads as that was quite common in the 70s. 6 year olds running down the stairs at 6am 😖

How about new oak treads? Could even have glass balustrades to give it a more modern look.

Good morning Emanuel. Thank you for the picture! It is easier to recommend something when we can see the actual staircase. For your steps and risers, I recommend using our stair cladding parts as you can install them over your existing steps and risers (they are extremely easy to install). You can go for a walnut or white oak timber/colour. The newel post, handrails and spindles don't look too bad so it is up to you if you want to change them or not. It would look better if you changed them. You can renovate them with a stop chamfered design, or you can even go with a glass design (which seems to be the preferred solution for staircase renovation in 2016). Because we have this competition going on, I would suggest that for now you place a small order (maybe buy the cladding products) and then, if you win, you'll be able to get the other stair parts for free. Here is one of the projects where we used our stair cladding parts with our glass panels.

You need to start with the drains........................all of them I presume are out the back. Knowing these houses it's probably most inconveniently right outside the dining room and near the kitchen wall................................So, probably, no to bathrooms at the front of the house unless you can be canny with a Sani flo macerator toilet......not everyone's cup of tea, and definitely not easily engineered all the way to the back of the house. Also, you need to work with the drains to know where you can put the bathroom / bathrooms upstairs, and hopefully avoid having the soil pipe in the kitchen. I would imagine that if you want two bathrooms, then they will need to go side by side and at the rear, where you have put beds 2 & 3. Firstly, as Jonathan quite rightly points out..................establish the budget. Get in touch with a structural engineer. You may at that point need the architect Get your plans drawn up Then get your quotes Sometimes, ( quite often ), at this point it may become apparent that the architect is not working to budget and the plans may need amending etc................ Change the plans, Get more quotes Then the builder.

I love these authentic staircases, I wouldn't change much about it. The colour largely depends on what else you have in the house, clean colours look good with pure white woodwork, earthy colours look better with off white. Sisal flooring wrapped round with pale painted woodwork would be my choice. I actually ripped out my hideous turned spindles (90s house) and revamped my stairs in this style.
