What a pretty room! How ornate do you want to go? How about a dado rail and panelling (look up "faux wainscoting" for a budget friendly DIY solution) in the same colour as the door frames and skirting, to go really old school and elegant? That sort of look suits a statement armchair perched in a corner. As others have said, that floral wallpaper/fabric is great in a bedroom (I think). In an adult bedroom, I'd go a bit nuts with this stuff, frankly. Easy enough to change if you decide to tone it down a bit. If you do it above some classic panelling, it would ameliorate the look. Otherwise, perhaps cool rustic luxury. Matt black lamps, brass, white marble, a stripped brick internal wall (messy but cheap to do). By the way, I am exactly in the same boat as you. We are just finishing the renovation of a Victorian house, and our master suite is the bit that needs to be finished. If it helps, I am genuinely torn between the two looks below. My wife prefers option one - she is a US east coaster, used to funky lofts and DC/NY chic. I like option two - I'm British and grew up with friends whose parents had rambling period country houses full of clutter and slightly bonkers decor, with the odd Spaniel ambling around. Option one: go cool. Option two: go big.

Hi Jonathan Thanks for your idea, yes in fact that is what we were initially thinking of doing. But now we are thinking if we shouldn't do a walk in wardrobe at all, so that we open up the space more.

I think it would help people here if you can say what kind of style(s) you like, to better advise you. Are these photos of a house you have yet to move in to, or is this your bedroom currently? Also, the layout of the bedroom/dressing room/en-suite(?) is not quite clear from these pics. Maybe you can take some more?

Hi, so this is what I thought. Create your own private master wing, everything on the left hand side of the yellow line is master suite. I have retained a connection to the family wing via the laundry room but remember this is only likely to be used by you as the rest of the household have their own staircase at their disposal. I would keep that connection, if there are small children to consider it’s a no-brainer, but also it’s practical for carrying out household tasks and is an alternative fire escape route. Of course how you lay this connection out is up to you, you can retain the corridor and sacrifice some bathroom space this may well be the way to go, I chose a different layout to disable the corridor as a primary ‘through route’ and to give the master wing a sense of retreat and sanctuary from hectic family life. I haven’t put in a walk in closet as combining the two far left bedrooms into one master suite presents this option internally to the space, if indeed it still feels like the way to go. As a next step I would seriously consider budgeting for an interior designer to get the absolute best out of your project. They will analyse how you and your family use the space, take the time to understand your personal priorities and identify any project limitations or sticking points such as structural queries, this information is then used to inform their proposal and will ensure the best results.
