Does external insulation look awful?

We refurbed and extended our new house last year on the edge of Surbiton, which included installing flush windows (the pics show the old and new windows and the porch has now also been changed to match.) We’re currently getting quotes for rendering the house with white silicon render and as we have a young baby and have very high heating bills, we’re considering adding external insulation when we do this. Practically, insulation is needed as this simple interwar-years house doesn’t have cavity walls but i am concerned it will look awful and was therefore thinking we should maybe only add it to the back and sides. (Though we did invest in some origin 4m by 2.3m patio doors at the back, so don’t really want to make those look bad either but the rear exterior appearance is less important.) . Any advice would be appreciated please on whether we should add exterior insulation and how best to do it in terms of thickness and where to add it. Advice on what the quotes should come in at for this small 3 bed semi would also be helpful.

Sorry cannot advise on your query re external insulation but wanted to say how much better your house looks with the new windows. What a transformation already.

Hi Louise. In the end we merely added new windows and a new door. We went for a mixture of Sapele and aluminium to break up the width of the house. The windows are made by Smart and are the Alitherm Heritage 47 range which are supposed to a close match to Critall. We also converted our garage and matched the windows and use of Sapele frame as well as having a bespoke Sapele gate. We're still not convinced we made the right choice by adding two sapele windows - but we always have the option to add aluminium ones to replace them and they are not too costly. So - it's not 100% what we wanted, but for the budget we had we are very pleased. The garage conversion is very cool inside with bespoke ply shelves/desk and seating area as well as ply walls. It is a homage to Corbusier and his Cabana in South of France :)

For a quick, easy and cheap facelift you'll be amazed how far a clean-up alone will go. Jet wash the wall and the driveway setts. Put a lick of paint on the ironwork, black would definitely be good. Brush in fresh kiln-dried sand between the setts. Prune back those sad looking shrubs before they get back into growth, which will be any time now. Don't cut back those firs, they will not grow back and are likely to just die. If you do anything at all with them, get rid and plant something which grows more happily in this country. It's a low definition photo so I can't see the state of the lawn or whether the wall needs re-pointing. Look yourself and treat accordingly. That alone will lift the place sufficiently to give you breathing space. Then you can think through what budget you have left and which of the many ideas available you prefer and can prioritise accordingly. On the other hand, whatever you do will not look good while all that looks scruffy and unloved.

Ah thanks guys for the hedge idea, we should have done that years ago! But now the garage is moving sides there won't actually be any garden on the new plan to hedge! It will all be blocked or the new resin product. We need to be able to drive a motor bike into the garage and the parking has always been tight for two big cars so we're just doing away with the grass and will use external lights and planters to soften the exterior. I like the idea of a nicer looking garage door, hubby needs an remote roller one so he doesn't have to get off the bike and open the door and get on again to park it inside - so I'll start looking to see if you can get anything roller like that's not too unattractive.

Hi Nigel i know its been two years since you posted this but i hope you get this message that im posting now. that air brick has nothing to do with your appliances. i am an ex surveyor and i use to issue EPC’S, we are living in a world today where we are told to insulate our property's to save energy by reducing heat loss. Air bricks have been around a long time, even King charles 1 back in 1630’s made it law to ventalate propertys to get rid of foul air that was making people sick. im at the process of making a video of a friend who is virtually dying from the lack of ventalation thats causing brown mould in her flat, the mould is growing from high humidity and not from damp, the brown mould is everywhere and the mould expert has condemmed her property. don’t be affraid of cold fresh air its good for you, when i was a child in the late 60’s we only had open fires that was only used during the winter. but our clothes were wormer back then as they were made with 100% cotton and wool. by blocking the vents increases toxins, do you want to breathe in air that you breathed out yesterday!

You have already improved the look of your home. Well done! We put on external insulation but did it at the same time as window replacement and we replaced windowsills and the gutters and facia at the same time. We were doing this anyway as we were fully renovating our house. You will be adding around 100mm to the outside of the house so you need to consider there will be a difference between you and your attached neighbours house and some of the features you have will need to be replicated which may not fully match what you have at present. The brick samples we looked at were a bit fake looking so I went for full render instead. Silicone render is the best. Grants are available so look that up in your area. In terms of heat retention, our house is snug and cozy so we have no regrets. It is however expensive. Read this article and shop around. Thanks Siobhan. Helpful advice. will check out the link as we’re looking to get this done asap - this month preferably. what was the additional 100mm made up of please? we’re thinking 50mm insulation and 1.5mm white silicon render.
