I love that table, with its well worn patina. I am slightly concerned about the glass being larger than the table, doesn't that mean it will stick out and have a overlapping edge to the table, sounds a bit dangerous to me. Also, having had glass topped tables in the past, they are a nightmare to keep clean and smear free, every crumb and speck of dust shows. I love the idea of new chairs, in a contemporary design to contrast though. What style would depend on how the rest of the room looks and what effect you are trying to achieve overall.

The glass is really just to give it a modern look and also increase space. I am planning to add some support at corners under the glass so its not over hanging completely. So it will look like a glass top dining table. It will be toughened glass of 10 mm atleast.

yes it will be toughened. either 10 or 12 mm clear toughened glass with rounded edges. Good idea for sticking with silicon.

I think you will ruin that lovely table sticking glass to it. If you want something bigger more modern why not pass this on or sell and invest in a more modern table? Maybe sell to an reclaimed furniture/antiques dealer and pick up something more modern while your there?

is there any other way to increase width. its 76 cm by 180 cm. If I can make it 90 cm by 180 cm , it will be fine for me.

Adding clear glass won’t make this look modern and if you add struts to support the glass being bigger you will ruin the view through to the table. I think you need to do back to the drawing board.

Consider selling this table to buy what you want….. alternatively have a new top put on that is the size you want- perhaps if you chose a modern looking concrete style (lots more practical than glass) you could paint the pedestal in a pewter colour to help it feel modern.

I am inspired to put glass by this table. this is the sort of look i want to create with glass. this glass is floating on old reclaimed wood.

But that image gives a completely different time era because of the legs

may be i drop glass idea and just attach some similar old oak panels to both sides. just need 5-7 cm wide planks on both sides and then it will be perfect.

I just love the table so much, it has real character, it would be a shame to try to make it look modern. I agree with other people, either get a modern table or make it the centrepiece of a real talking point of contrast, traditional table against modern chairs; this is such a lovely combination that many people die for in magazines, and you have the head start on the look!?

I can’t really see that it’s worth the hassle or expense of changing the table for an extra 10cm width. However, you seem very keen to find a way to make it work so I wonder if it’s possible to remove the table top, have it cut lengthways down the middle & insert an extra section - wood, marble, granite, something covered with a thin sheet of brass or copper? Not sure it would even be possible or look right but just a thought.

That is the only reason why I considered increasing the width. Its 76 cm by 182 cm currently which technically is within range for a 6 seater table. It seems adding glass is likely more hassle than what it will achieve.

@tamp75 I did think about it but I was wondering if I can buy a table top or strips/planks of similar wood and attach to sides. Then lightly sand the surface and treat with was/oil etc.
