Design Dilemma Renovating Home Decorating

want to update railing

I’d like some help with ideas to update this railing and gate. I need the gate to keep my adult daughter safe. Would like to remove the wood and replace with metal spindles with wood top rail. The Newell post may be difficult to remove, could it be covered with a skin for flat shape? Floor is bamboo and will stay.

checkout stairsupplies.com, we ordered from them and my contractor found it easy to install. Lots of options for railing, newel posts, and steel/iron balusters.

I like what you currently have. Perhaps adding colorful rugs would give you an updated look? Maybe a fancier light and artwork would be nice, too. These might not be what you are looking for, but sometimes updates are really not improvements.

Where are you located. The railings above are very nice. There are also timber options of more natural works timber such as the images here. A little more individual to bog standard farmers fence. It would be worth you considering if you have rabbits in your area and if they will eat anything you may plant within the garden to the property - They will eat just about anything. Rabbit proofing may be required.

Do I paint the mantelpiece (and picture rail)?

Hi - I wouldn't paint the fireplace or the mantel - particularly if it is the original, the fire surround tiling looks original possibly I can't tell from the pick. I would remove the picture rail completely, then I would build white cupboard doors and box in your book shelves then build a matching pair of door cupboards and and mount on the right handside of the chimney breast - wall mount your TV and satellite box etc on a tilting cantilever bracket with a shelf either above or below to store all your DVD's xbox games etc.. The doors are easy to make from MDF or tongue and groove, paint them white ( or cream and they will hide and safely store all your bits and pieces.) Choose hinges that you like to set it off. Then when you look at your fire place your eye will be drawn to it as a focal point, cosy in winter, lovely flower vase or plants when not in use, and by disguising any clutter and raising the eye level your room will look bigger too! - let us know what you do and post an updated pick !

Grapefruit1_ar , I just find the look is so dated- not vintage or classic just dated- I considered painting - I think rugs could be a tripping hazard for my girl. Your right I need a new light and art

BeverlyFLADeziner I never considered white spindles but that is a nice soft look with the wood- might suit my bamboo- thanks

There are some DIYs out there using your existing post. Just google on Pinterest and a lot will pop up. You could update it and paint the spindles and railing, unless you just want a totally different look. I think part of the issue may be the color of the walls while it's nice, it's a dated look for the current trends, so you may want to consider painting walls along with the railing if time and money allow.

Thanks Emily- I am going to be painting the walls in an off white, probably using Calm- so with that perhaps just covering the Newell post and painting the spindles white- only thing is my gate has black metal- I’m adding a pic

You could have a gate made so the spindles and height were the same, but if that's not an option I think I'd just paint them all the same.
