What colour dado rails please?

Please help solve an argument.. We've just replaced the skirting boards and varnished them on medium oak. my hubby wants to do the dado's the same colour but I can't stand them and want to paint them white to blend in with the rest of the walls (apart from our feature wall). The other option is to do them the same colour as our feature wall. what would you suggest please? Ps please ignore the mess, we've only just finished fitting the skirting boards and got into this debate!

Hi, I'd go with your instinct as I agree. Paint them the colour of the walls. Dado's are very much out at the moment and will blend nicely with what you have done! Hope that helps? Lucie

I would make a feature of it; it adds character and structure and takes the eye sweepingly along and up which is good for adding a sense of space. Could you paint it a colour that ties in with something else - the flooring or a rug, for example? Or you could put patterned wallpaper or a different colour paint below and a lighter shade above it. You could also hang pictures in the feature shapes above though if they aren't original I'd be tempted to get rid of them. I'd move away from the rather feminine and twee decoration and make it bolder, stronger.

Hi Hutsly, Thank you for giving your opinion which has been very useful. In the 1st, 3rd and 4th pictures, there is a shelf halfway up the stairs. Behind the piece of decorative skirting that forms the side of the shelf was housed a lot of the pipes for the house. I expect that this was a later addition but most of the houses up the street, which are identical, have something similar here. There is a mix of some of the houses in the street having dado rails and others not so we have assumed that they were original to the houses. We are trying to do the house up as sympathetically as possible, hence the refurbished leaded lights on the 2nd floor landing (picture 2). It is just difficult to decide whether today they just look out of place and should therefore be excluded or whether to be true to how the house was originally.

I'm a big fan of using bold colour on walls so if I'd seen this post last year before you'd chosen the floor tile I would have said to go for your original blue idea. However, I think the lovely tile you've chosen has all the colour you need. In this case I'd keep the walls a simple off white all over as suggested above and pick out the colour in your woodwork, e.g. the front door, skirting and architraves (but not the dado rail which should be the same colour as the walls). Some painted furniture, like a console table, and artwork that reflect some of the floor colours will then pull the whole scheme together.

Thank you. I'm winning so far!! personally I would have done the skirting boards white too, but we are saving to replace the carpet with wooden flooring so the hubby won on that one!
