Dark Staircase with Dado Rail and Picture Rail

We are going to decorate our hall, stairs and landing which is quite dark with not a great deal of natural light. The HSL have a dado rail and a picture rail which give us 5 things to consider painting 1 ) the woodwork i.e. doorframes, skirting, dado and picture rails [the doors are pine] 2) Below the dado 3) Between dado and picture rail 4) Above picture rail 5) the ceiling

The woodwork needs to be white, so my question is, what do you consider the best way of doing the wall and ceiling areas. Since it's a dark hallway, the colours have got to be on the lighter shades.

Options are:

1) Darker colour under the dado, lighter shade between dado and picture rail and then white above picture rail and ceiling .... I'm not sure if this looks a bit dated and fussy these days with effectively three different colours on the wall.

2) Have the same colour above and below the dado rail and then white above picture rail and ceiling.

3) Have white under the dado rail, have a band of colour between dado and picture rail and then white above picture rail and ceiling

4) Same as 3, but having a very light off white under the dado and above picture rail and ceiling.

Has anyone got any experience of having a dado and a picture rail and what did you decide to plump for? What is the modern way of looking at this? And the last question - I've been looking at some greys for this hallway, but I'm really not sure that my pine doors and grey paint make great bedfellows - again, opinions gratefully received.

And here is a photo - probably worth mentioning that our front door is a very dark brown colour and the internal doors are currently pine but will probably end up being painted white. The brown on the bannisters is also going to painted white.

I'm a big fan of using bold colour on walls so if I'd seen this post last year before you'd chosen the floor tile I would have said to go for your original blue idea. However, I think the lovely tile you've chosen has all the colour you need. In this case I'd keep the walls a simple off white all over as suggested above and pick out the colour in your woodwork, e.g. the front door, skirting and architraves (but not the dado rail which should be the same colour as the walls). Some painted furniture, like a console table, and artwork that reflect some of the floor colours will then pull the whole scheme together.

What do you mean by slanted it? My sister in law has an archway from her lounge through to the dining room. She has a dado in her lounge and that’s where it ends. Nothing in the archway and none in the dining room. Hope that helps.

thanks all! Would definately have to start it just past the 2nd step anyway due to the light switch. it's existing staircase and room @minnie101 but we just added the en-suite. It originally had the rail to the right on the short side so nothing on the return area. That's what I was wondering as well ie the return part - it's only one step down from the bedroom floor so technically shouldn't need a short rail there. Will measure it just up to the top main step then - wasn't sure if I could take it further up or if it would look odd. Shame as I saw a lovely anthracite metal rail but it only went to 2m! bah.
