What colour above/below dado rails?
Hi All
I recently fitted dado rails in the hallway and landing to break up the large ceilings and restore a bit of period character to the house (circa 1905). I'm struggling to decide on colour choice above & below though? And should there be any thought given to co-ordinating with adjacent rooms? (bedrooms all painted Egyptian cotton & front reception room dark red up to picture rails)

Comments (12)I'm loving all the advice, suggestions and photos. Thanks everyone! Finding it really helpful. The ceiling must remain white because I don't want to have to paint it again. Hellish job! I really like the idea of painting the rail and skirting boards the same as the wall. Would I use eggshell for the skirtings or a matt varnish over emulsion? Suppose either would do the job? Like the idea of using a lighter shade of the wall colour above the rail. I think the white scheme looks super smart, but I might try the colour and see how it looks. Using colour in that space really appeals to me. The wallpaper idea has worked well in our bedroom, it makes the room feel cosy and personal. But, it might be too much for our lounge, which is a much bigger room with a lot going on already. The lounge window faces east so very light at one end, and very dark at the other. It's a cool room during the day, but cosy in the evening with fire lit. If using the wallpaper idea, give some careful thought to your choice of pattern. The size and repeat. I have picture rails in all rooms but dado rails in the hallways as I find it really breaks up the room and my toddler uses them to wipe his sticky fingers on, rather than the walls. I think your rail may be a little high though, like ours were and we also had 'dado rail art' at the top of the stairs. Took plastering to fix. It's really nice having pictures up the stairs which I haven't got around to as I don't have picture rails and drills make me worry our ancient plaster will crumble...so wonder if picture rails could have helped with that. Comments (0)We are going to decorate our hall, stairs and landing which is quite dark with not a great deal of natural light. The HSL have a dado rail and a picture rail which give us 5 things to consider painting 1 ) the woodwork i.e. doorframes, skirting, dado and picture rails [the doors are pine] 2) Below the dado 3) Between dado and picture rail 4) Above picture rail 5) the ceiling The woodwork needs to be white, so my question is, what do you consider the best way of doing the wall and ceiling areas. Since it's a dark hallway, the colours have got to be on the lighter shades. Options are: 1) Darker colour under the dado, lighter shade between dado and picture rail and then white above picture rail and ceiling .... I'm not sure if this looks a bit dated and fussy these days with effectively three different colours on the wall. 2) Have the same colour above and below the dado rail and then white above picture rail and ceiling. 3) Have white under the dado rail, have a band of colour between dado and picture rail and then white above picture rail and ceiling 4) Same as 3, but having a very light off white under the dado and above picture rail and ceiling. Has anyone got any experience of having a dado and a picture rail and what did you decide to plump for? What is the modern way of looking at this? And the last question - I've been looking at some greys for this hallway, but I'm really not sure that my pine doors and grey paint make great bedfellows - again, opinions gratefully received. PRO7 years agolast modified: 7 years agoNot so much in to two coloured walls these days either. Egyptian cotton all over, keep it plain, keep it simple, keep it flowing in to the other rooms and go to town on the stair runner.

7 years agoYes Steve a dark grey or blue would look good. Two tone isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but when I see it I really like it. It looks especially good in a period home. Grey all over with white paintwork also looks really. It’s only paint, so if you hate it you can always repaint!
PRO7 years agoHi Steve, we think that a neutral or soft wall colour will work well to keep the space open and airy. Team it with a light striped carpet like our Avebury or Bouclé Neutrals ranges as pictured that will help create a timeless feel. Hi folks, thanks for all the input but I've not had a chance to revisit this until now with all the other chaos going on!
I've pretty much settled on the tiles I'm going to use in the hall so want something that will work with these. I'm currently leaning towards a darker grey/blur-grey/green-grey on the bottom and white on the top, but would be interested to hear the opinion of others?

I always feel those type of tiles look better with a simple wall finish. They are beautiful by the way. I would choose a colour that is in the tiles and use that all over. Or how about a soft white from the Farrow & Ball range? Their colours are soft and go so well with period features.

I do agree the whites look good. I was actually now thinking about one of the 3 darker colours shown in this pic below the rail, and just plain white above the same as the ceilings? I've seen a few variations online and it looks pretty good. I guess the other alternative is to choose something soft and neutral but go all over with it? I actually have a sample of just walnut so I'd be interested to see a photo of the finished article..

I'm a big fan of using bold colour on walls so if I'd seen this post last year before you'd chosen the floor tile I would have said to go for your original blue idea. However, I think the lovely tile you've chosen has all the colour you need. In this case I'd keep the walls a simple off white all over as suggested above and pick out the colour in your woodwork, e.g. the front door, skirting and architraves (but not the dado rail which should be the same colour as the walls). Some painted furniture, like a console table, and artwork that reflect some of the floor colours will then pull the whole scheme together.
