It's a granite and resin composite worktop. It is templated and fitted the same as granite. Has all the same aesthetics- however it is much more water/stain resistant and scratch resistant. Let me know if you need any other help. Jade x

White quartz is incredibly popular right now as it adds the feels and look of granite but removes the flaws of the natural stone. You'll find some varied and different stories of life with a white quartz worktop but essentially what you've got to remember is that a little maintenance and care does work wonders. Another option would be Corian or similar acrylic worktop materials however this can be a little on the pricey side (kitchen size dependent) and does tend to need a little extra care and attention paid to it. One thing to consider aswell is what is the kitchen life like at home? Busy with a number of children running around? Pots and pans left on the worktop until the end of the day? Or is it a little less panicky etc. This will also play a huge part in your final choice of worktop material.

Mnnn personally for a better finish I would scrape away all the grey it looks quite brittle anyway and would just end up peeling if you paint over it. Can't really tell if its plaster underneath or not but there are a few products on the market to smooth over surfaces prior to decorating and even they recommend removing any cracking loose bits.
