Building a Home Renovating

looking for help with layout

Hello, I have recently bought a property and have an extension being built. I’m looking for someone to help design the layout of the ground floor as I am completely renovating the space. Who would I hire for this, an architect or an interior designer?

Hi Tammy,

Architects are great at the outside of buildings and working with builders/engineers etc to get something made i.e an extension.

Interior designers come in all different types, some are great at colours and curtains, others at flow and practicality so it's about finding what works for you. (There's also a lot of flow between the skills so some architects might be good at internal layout but some aren't)

I'm more on the practical side of interior design. I like spaces to work for you and your family, giving you space to display your own personality of items you've collected over the years. Other people may be a better fit for you if you want fabric suggestions and pompoms.

There are lots of companies on Houzz Find A Pro pages so you can have a browse at all the different options.

Can you post a layout , include where the window & door and also the radiator, which looks not to be under the window ( not helping ). Also, as you are keeping the furniture, could you include the sizes of those pieces too. I think Hague blue will look great, really restful in a bedroom too. Maybe you could change the handles on the furniture for slightly more old fashioned ones to tie in with the bed also.

Your bed seems perfect for a nice soft romantic look, I would go for a floral paper behind bed (Raipur floral from wall paperdirect) is romantic but bang on trend colour wise, if you could, put fitted wardrobes along the wall behind the door, move your dresser to the alcove where your wardrobe is now, maybe invest in some drawers for under the bed also, storage seems a bit of a problem, and I would go with maybe stiffkey blue paint for the rest of the walls. This will give a nice cosy atmosphere to your room. A place to go and unwind. You could you white and silver accessories for that fresh feeling too. Nothing like crisp white bed linen. Yes Jen, that was one of our ideas. Man about the house - this was an idea we had too, I really like the back door coming straight into the utility/mud room. We did think about putting the toilet into the front right of the garage and having a door to it from the utility (if we move utility move into the rest of that garage). We keep going back to that idea Then we seen your plan Rinq, it’s great! It’s made us rethink the whole thing and really like the fact I can see the play room, lounge and dining room so I can keep an eye on the kids at all times while cooking. My husband also loves an island so this makes him really happy too! Thanks for all your input, definitely lots of ideas now and lots to think about
