Hi there, it looks like a lovely unit, but I would be reluctant to attempt to rework it. There is rather more to it than perhaps first meets the eye - it looks as though the side panels are, in fact, five separate piece, at least 3 of which (top and bottom frame pieces and centre panel) would need modified, and it would involve rather more than just sawing a small section out!. So you have to multiply that twice, then modify the base, top and any internal shelves. Then you would have to possibly refinish (varnish/oil or whatever) and tidy any newly reworked edges. Oh, and I can't quite see if the top is wood or stone - if the latter, then that has another set of challenges! The reality is that you would need a really high quality carpenter to do a job like this well, and s/he would need a decent amount of time to do it properly. So if you look at the typical daily rate for someone like that - near me, that could be £200-£250 - and factor in at least 1 day, then I am not sure it is something I could justify. If you love the style (and it is a beautiful piece!), why not have a look at Stonearth who do some similar products in beautiful solid woods who might have something in better dimensions? Then you might be able to return or sell on the unit. Or if you really love it, well - 4 inches isn't really that much, is it??

Is it an electric faux wood burner? How much heat does it emit in its position?

Nicholas: there is no dishwasher, only a washing machine, and unfortunately I can't move it by the sink as it would leave a weird gap (and plumbing is in the way on the right hand side). I can't move the doorway either (the radiator is in the way, and I am trying to avoid major works to walls/doorway). OnePlan: thanks, I was previously thinking about putting the tall larder next to the fridge, but it might make that side of the kitchen look too cluttered or unbalanced with two tall units in the corner (and that would still not resolve the gap behind the door, in the right hand side bottom corner). Please see picture 1 vs picture 2 (this is a very basic sketch, not the actual units). Very good idea about the infill - I have a decorative corner post that I could put between the 60cm and the 55cm units, to create a smoother transition (see picture 3 - please ignore the dirty floor, it will be replaced). In this case - would you run the worktop a few cm longer to cover the corner post/infill, and round/cut the corner of the worktop to the contour of the corner post? I'd have to check if I have an extra 5cm or so I could use up for this purpose. Or, if the worktop only runs to cover the 60cm deep unit, and ends there, is there any other way to cover the top of the corner post? I'm also thinking about creating a seating area, maybe a little bench on that side of the wall.... Thanks for reading, and any ideas are welcome!
